Abstract

Rice plant numbers and density are key factors for yield and quality of rice grains. Precise and properly estimated rice plant numbers and density can assure high yield from rice fields. The main objective of this study was to automatically detect and count rice plants using images of usual field condition from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). We proposed an automatic image processing method based on morphological operation and boundaries of the connected component to count rice plant numbers after transplanting. We converted RGB images to binary images and applied adaptive median filter to remove distortion and noises. Then we applied a morphological operation to the binary image and draw boundaries to the connected component to count rice plants using those images. The result reveals the algorithm can conduct a performance of 89% by the F-measure, corresponding to a Precision of 87% and a Recall of 91%. The best fit image gives a performance of 93% by the F-measure, corresponding to a Precision of 91% and a Recall of 96%. Comparison between the numbers of rice plants detected and counted by the naked eye and the numbers of rice plants found by the proposed method provided viable and acceptable results. The R2 value was approximately 0.893.

Abstract

The music industry of the digital age has witnessed seemingly endless battles involving copyright. Though continuous efforts to strengthen copyright under romantic understating have benefited major actors in the industry, it has threatened creativity and net activism in the digital age. This study argues rhetoric used by the industry regarding how file sharing and digital environments hurt music sales is inadequate. It has enabled the industry and its major labels to embolden copyright and protective legislation with the government’s support. This article will reveal that the issue surrounding copyright under the romantic notion is not an outdated one confined to the early era of digital music This article will argue that major players in the industry are repeating the old strategic approach of controlling the music market. This is achieved by limiting practices of music audiences and future creativity such as the creation of amateur content and emergence of new business models.

Abstract

Video games are an alternative channel for public health authorities constantly striving to reach target audiences and make positive changes. The objective of this research is to address effectiveness of health games as a health promotion technology for anti-smoking communication. This study tested the impact of advertising message types and voice-over relative to anti-smoking persuasion. By using commercial-level custom-made first person shooter (FPS) games, two experimental studies demonstrated usefulness of applying health games to change a player’s attitude towards smoking. In particular, an interactive in-game message with a persuasive voice over was the most effective method to change targets’ attitude towards smoking. Findings of our research offer meaningful insight on health promotion research and provide possible directions for future anti-smoking communication using health games.

Abstract

With tremendous advancement of information and communication technologies, mobile learning systems have been widely adopted in language learning contexts, and several frameworks have been developed for identifying and categorizing different factors of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL). However, pre-existing frameworks have limitations when evaluating the importance level of criteria. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive hierarchical framework for identifying and categorizing success factors of MALL and prioritizing them according to the importance level. To do that, AHP method is used to quantitatively estimate weight values of MALL criteria. Results reveal that the priority of MALL criteria is ordered as follows: content, system, learner, language learning. Local weights of each criterion are also analyzed; for example, usefulness, accuracy, and authenticity are critical factors for improving MALL contents. Ease of use and mobility of MALL systems are also considered more critical than other systematic factors. In addition, availability of immediate feedback and self-directness has the highest weight values of importance. The findings of the study are discussed regarding hierarchical orders of MALL criteria and conclude that successful MALL implementation may be achieved if related elements are diversely measured and evaluated. Pedagogical implications and suggestions for further research are also presented.

Abstract

The development of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has changed the manner in which English teachers are taught as instructors, as well as English language learners. Online-related technology, a product of development of ICT technology, is used for various purposes such as training teachers and enhancing professionalism of current teachers to practice more efficient training. The purpose of this study is to extract common domains and sub-domains related to development of cyber-type in-service training (INSET) through domestic and international case analyses and to develop content areas of INSET using cyberspace or efficient online INSET programs. To accomplish the purpose of this study, domestic and foreign cases were analyzed in relation to direction of development of online English teacher training programs.

Abstract

Documents of the last few decades typically include more than one kind of language, so linguistic classification of each word is essential, especially in terms of English and Korean in handwritten documents. Traditional methods mostly use conventional features of structural or stroke features, but sometimes they fail to identify many characteristics of words because of complexity introduced by handwriting. Therefore, traditional methods lead to a considerably more-complicated task and naturally lead to possibly poor results. In this study, convolutional neural network (CNN) is used for classification of English and Korean handwritten words in text documents. Experimental results reveal that the proposed method works effectively compared to previous methods.

Abstract

As a computational approach to literary criticism, the method of character network analysis has attracted attention. The character network is composed of nodes as characters and links as relationship between characters, and has been used to analyze literary works systematically. However, there were limitations in that relationships between characters were so superficial that they could not reflect intimate relationships and quantitative data from the network were not interpreted in depth regarding meaning of literary works. In this study, we propose an improved method of character network analysis through a case study on the play <Hamlet>. First, we segmented the character network into a dialogue network focused on speaker-to-listener relationship and an opinion network focused on subject-to-object relationship. We analyzed these networks in various ways and discussed how analysis results could reflect structure and meaning of the work. Through these studies, we strived to find a way of organic and meaningful connection between literary criticism in humanities and network analysis in computer science.

Abstract

This is a descriptive research study that classified Korean adults with obesity into those with Metabolically Healthy Obesity and those with Metabolically Unhealthy Obesity based on the data from the fifth and sixth South Korea’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, designed due to the development of information and communication technology, to examine the impacts of obese adults’ health behavior factors and mental health factors on their metabolic state. With respect to data analysis, the collected data were analyzed by complex sample statistics. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Men who were smoking at the time of the survey had a 1.29 times higher probability of inclusion in the MUO group than in the MHO group. Women who had a high stress cognition rate had a 1.02 times higher probability of inclusion in the MUO group than in the MHO group. This study is significant as it provides the basic data for establishing strategies of nursing intervention for the promotion of obese adults’ health, and it suggests that it is necessary to develop a program for the promotion of obese adults’ health based on these results.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the types of injuries and the protective behaviors of soccer club members to prevent injuries, and promote health. Data was collected from 395 soccer club members from thirteen football clubs in Seoul and Gyeonggi province using question tool developed by researchers. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 23 for descriptive analysis and Chi-square test. The results showed that sport for soccer injuries was serious and medical expenses was significant. The demographic information showed that 50-year-old and over adults were vulnerable and had a disproportionate number of injuries. Those employees who helded administrative positions, white-collar and specialized jobs also experienced the high level of injury experience. Despite this many injuries, many respondents appeared to be lacking a protective actions, such as not wearing protective gear. It was critical for the club members to improve their knowledge and awareness of safe sports activities.

Abstract

Women's menopause is a natural process that every woman must eventually experience, but changes in hormones before and after menopause can serve to produce life-threatening crises in some situations, with individual differences. Data for the study was elicited from 22,610 Korean women ranging in age from 45 to 55 years in the 2013 Korean Community Health Survey. Statistical analyses was performed using descriptive, t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS IBM 20.0 version. Individual characteristics, lifestyle, history of chronic disease(s), psychological and environmental factors were included as independent and EQ5D weights of Koreans were used as dependent variables. The survey subjects consisted of a total 15,505(58.3%) in their 50s, 1,765 (66.5%) in middle and high school dropouts or graduates, 22,174 (83.3%) living in spouses and 10,534(39.6%) in wages. There was a significant difference in HRQOL among all independent variables except drinking and residential areas. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that age, smoking, obesity and other incidental disease factors (fall, angina, asthma, arthritis, osteoporosis, stroke) had a negative effect on HRQOL. The selected independent variables accounted for 22.7% of HRQOL. It is necessary to find a way to improve HRQOL of Korean perimenopausal women, focusing on the significant variables revealed by the study results.
