Abstract

For 3D display applications, auto-stereoscopic display methods that can provide 3D images without glasses have been actively developed. This paper is concerned with developing a display system for elemental images of real space using integral imaging. Unlike the conventional method, which reduces a color image to the level as much as a generated depth image does, we have minimized original color image data loss by generating an enlarged depth image with interpolation methods. Our method was efficiently implemented by applying a GPU parallel processing technique with OpenCL to rapidly generate a large amount of elemental image data. We also obtained experimental results for displaying higher quality integral imaging rather than one generated by previous methods.

Abstract

The extent and depth of the event plan determines the scope of pedagogical experience in situations and consequently the quality of immersive learning based on our simulated world. In contrast to planning in conventional narrative-based systems mainly pursuing dramatic interests, planning in virtual world-based pedagogical systems strive to provide realistic experiences in immersed situations. Instead of story plot comprising predetermined situations, our inter-event planning method aims at simulating diverse situations that each involve multiple events coupled via their associated agents’ conditions and meaningful associations between events occurring in a background world. The specific techniques to realize our planning method include, two-phase planning based on inter-event search and intra-event decomposition (down to the animated action level); autonomous and independent agents to behave proactively with their own belief and planning capability; full-blown background world to be used as the comprehensive stage for all events to occur in; coupling events via realistic association types including deontic associations as well as conventional causality; separation of agents from event roles; temporal scheduling; and parallel and concurrent event progression mechanism. Combining all these techniques, diverse exogenous events can be derived and seamlessly (i.e., semantically meaningfully) integrated with the original event to form a wide scope of situations providing chances of abundant pedagogical experiences. For effective implementation of plan execution, we devise an execution scheme based on multiple priority queues, particularly to realize concurrent progression of many simultaneous events to simulate its corresponding reality. Specific execution mechanisms include modeling an action in terms of its component motions, adjustability of priority for agent across different events, and concurrent and parallel execution method for multiple actions and its expansion for multiple events.

Abstract

To ensure safety of bridges, it is critical to inspect and assess physical and functional conditions regularly. Presently, most highway bridges in the U.S. are inspected visually. However, this method of inspection is often influenced by the bridge inspector's knowledge and experience. So, reliability and accuracy of inspection results may be problematic. To solve such problems, an extensive number of robotics systems and image processing techniques for bridge inspection methods have been proposed. These robotics systems and image processing techniques are used to measure various bridge conditions, such as apparent damage, displacement and dynamic characteristics. This paper provides a comprehensive review of robotics systems and image processing technologies used in bridge inspection.

Abstract

Social network service (SNS) data related to green tourism were used to estimate preferred tour sites and users’ interests. Keywords related with green tour activities were employed to search the SNS data. SNS data were collected from Korean blogs such as Naver and Daum from June 1st to August 31st between 2015 and 2017 using text-mining solution. During the study period, seven hundred and five posts were analyzed. Associated words that frequently co-occurred with keywords were classified into different categories depending on the nature of associated words. Associated words included swimming pools and camping sites (location); experience and swimming pools (attribute); and water play and culture (culture/leisure). Our data suggest that SNS users with experience of green tourism in Korea exhibited interest in green tourism with swimming pools, camping sites, experience, water play and/or culture rather than particular popular sites. Based on the findings, it is recommended that preferred facilities such as swimming pools should be provided at green tourism sites to meet the users’ needs and to facilitate green tourism.

Abstract

This study examined the factors influencing the intention to use smartwatches using the integrated model of technology acceptance model (TAM) and innovation diffusion theory (IDT). An online survey was conducted and the data were analyzed using the structural equation modeling (SEM). The results showed that the research model had an acceptable fit, and all paths, except for the one from the perceived ease of use to the intention to use, were supported. Regarding paths from IDT to TAM, it was observed that higher the compatibility, the users perceived greater usefulness. Additionally, both observability and trialability influenced the perceived ease of use. However, perceived ease of use affected the intention only through the mediated effect of perceived usefulness. The implication of the study lies on the major focus on the effects of users’ perceptions regarding innovative characteristics of smartwatches on the intention to adopt and attempted to increase the explanatory power of the TAM and IDT by combining both.

Abstract

Purpose: Food Allergen Immunotherapy (Oral) is a form of immunotherapy administered to patients who are allergic to foods such as egg, milk, and peanut. The food allergen is orally administered to the patient in an escalating dose for desensitization or tolerance development. The safety and effectiveness of the therapy were assessed using a systematic literature review and meta-analysis. Methods: For a literature search, 8 national databases and a number of international databases including Ovid-MEDLINE, Ovid-EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were used; and 13 articles (all from international databases) were selected. The target of Food Allergen Immunotherapy (Oral) included patients with food allergy, and the intervention was food allergen immunotherapy without limiting the food type. The safety and effectiveness of Food Allergen Immunotherapy (Oral) were assessed by reviewing all the articles reporting on the therapy. The control group received standard therapies including aversion therapy, no treatment, anti-histamine treatment, and placebo. Safety was assessed through the incidence of complication and emergency medication. Effectiveness was assessed based on therapy success rate, symptomatic improvement, and quality of life. Results: Although Food Allergen Immunotherapy (Oral) was shown to have successful desensitization in patients with food allergy, the safety of the technique has not yet reached an acceptable level; the possible reason is due to the high rate of complication and frequency of emergency medication. Also, each study employed varying protocols while relying on a small number of participants and a short monitoring period. Conclusion: The results of assessment suggest that the level of evidence from current literature review is low and further research is necessitated for the verification of the safety and effectiveness of the therapy (Grade of Recommendation: A; Level of Technology: II-b).

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the status of star chart game applications in the Google play store in Korea. The share of game genres in paid and free star charts of game applications was searched. Also, the average reviewer’s rating, average number of reviews, and average age rating based on the genre of paid and free star charts of game applications, and the average price of paid applications based on genre were analyzed. Hypothesis tests for the differences in average reviewer’s rating, average number of reviews, average age rating according to the genre of game applications were performed. Also, hypothesis tests for the differences in average reviewer’s rating, average number of reviews, average age rating between the paid and free game applications along with the hypothesis test for the differences in price according to the genre of paid game applications were performed. Lastly, hypothesis tests for the correlation between the start chart ranking and number of reviews in association with the correlation between the start chart ranking and reviewer’s rating were performed. Statistically significant differences in average reviewer’s rating, average number of reviews, average age rating according to the genre of game applications, and between the paid and free game applications were verified. However, the correlation between the start chart ranking and number of reviews in association with the correlation between the start chart ranking and reviewer’s rating were not statistically significant.

Abstract

Based on the previous studies on sinkholes and ground subsidence conducted until date, the factors affecting the occurrence of sinkholes can be divided into natural environmental factors and human environmental factors in accordance with the purpose of the study. Furthermore, to be more specific, the human environment can be classified into the artificial type and the social type. In this study, the assessment indices for assessing risks of sinkholes and ground subsidence were developed by performing AHP analysis based on the results of the study by Lee et al. (2016), who selected the risk factors for the occurrence of sinkholes by performing Delphi analysis targeting relevant experts. Analysis showed that the artificial environmental factors were of significance in affecting the occurrence of sinkholes. Explicitly, the underground factors were found to be of importance in the natural environment, and among them, the level of underground water turned out to be an imperative influencing factor. In the artificial environment, the underground and subterranean structures exhibited similar importance, and in the underground structures, the excessive use of the underground space was found to be an important influencing factor. In the subterranean ones, the level of water leakage and the erosion of the water supply and sewage piping system were the influential factors, and in the surface, compaction failure was observed as an imperative factor. In the social environment, the regional development, and above all, the groundwater overuse were found to be important factors. In the managemental and institutional environment, the improper construction management proved to be the most important influencing factor.

Abstract

Unlike in the past, where the expression of the form was given a priority, with the widening of the scopes of the designs, the proportion of design education institution curricula targeting user experience and the application of technology is continually and gradually increasing. Open source microcontroller boards such as Arduino have initiated attracting attention as a countermeasure against these changes. These prototyping tools have many advantages for the diversification of expression and design verification in the design field and therefore have a high likelihood of being introduced into many design education institutes; however, the tools act as high entry barriers for design students who lack engineering knowledge. Although various educational content and tools have been developed to address the issue of barrier, existing solutions remain insufficient as alternatives for the purpose of activation. In this study, we investigated the present state of related education content and conducted a pilot workshop using a prototype microcontroller board with simplified coding. We intend to use the results of this investigation to develop study material for design education. We started by conducting a survey regarding the pre-university education situation. It was observed that engineering education opportunities are insufficient and the problem of mutual application between educations due to course-based education was not realized. We also analyzed the characteristics of simplified training tools using the microcontroller to establish a direction for educational design and conducted a pilot workshop using the microcontroller toolkit with a simplified coding process based on this content. Students who lack a basic knowledge of engineering technology received instruction, and after completing minimum preliminary training, they proceeded to practical exercises that involved utilizing the toolkit. Through this process, we identified the need for a simple-type microcontroller board with low-complexity for use in educating students majoring in design. We also identified some obstacles that serve as barriers to entry of utilizing microcontroller board. Based on these results, we propose several functional requirements and teaching guidelines for prototyping toolkits for design education.

Abstract

A new breed of universities equipped with student-centered education programs and advanced digital technologies is changing the face of higher education. “Flipped learning” is heralded as a new model of education, yet its effect is underexplored. The purpose of this study is to provide evaluation criteria to assess and understand the merit of student-centered education programs and apply them to actual cases. Discussion on the nature of knowledge, its production mechanism and system, and possible contribution of digital technology to user-centered programs are discussed to produce five key criteria; initiative of students, interaction in class, interaction in field, customization of courses, and automated personal service. They are applied to evaluation of Minerva and Ecole 42.
