Abstract

In this paper, we propose a mesh smoothing method for mesh models with noise. The proposed method enables not only the removal of noise from the vertexes but the preservation and smoothing of shape recognized as edges and corners. The magnitude ratio of 2D area and 3D volume in mesh data is adopted for the smoothing of noise. Comparing with previous smoothing methods, this method does not need many iteration of the smoothing process and could preserve the shape of original model. Experimental results demonstrate improved performance of the proposed approach in 3D mesh smoothing.

Abstract

In this paper, the authors showed that the removal of impulse noise in CR images was implemented using variety of median filters and SNR/PSNR measurements. They used three kinds of medical images-hand, skull, and knee- for experimental results. But the noise in CR image was only the impulse noise. In real medical image, the noise of an image would be very different type. Therefore, the lack of experimental results using different noise in CR images is one flaw.

Abstract

The existence of Korean schools is one of the salient characteristics of Overseas Koreans. How do such schools for Korean immigrants’ children try to construct Korean ethnic identity? Also, how is immigrant children’s ethnic identity developed and reinforced by the education at those schools? This paper explores these questions based on an ethnographic research at a Korean school in Paris from September 2005 to December 2007. The cultural education for immigrant children at the Korean school has a tendency to emphasize the most exotic traits of Korean culture. And this emphasis on the unfamiliar elements of Korean culture doesn't seem to help to form the ethnic identity of Korean immigrants’ children. Instead, the students appear to get the sense of being a member of Koreans more from the education outside of classroom such as scholastic events than in a classroom of a Korean school. That’s because scholastic events allow them to play out some of the Korean culture in more inter-ethnic settings. Therefore, it can be concluded that ethnicity of immigrant children is rather developed in inter-ethnic social contexts than born with or taught in class.

Abstract

This study is focused on the causal relationship between children's intimate behavior and the level of perception towards their grandparents. Their perceptions are related to factors such as proximity, similarity, superiority, favorableness, and self-disclosure. We clarified the relation between intimate behavior and perception using effect factors of children's behavior regarding their grandparents so that this study could be used as an elementary material in developing a solution to improve grandparent-grandchild relationship where the grandparent actively encourages grandchildren's intimate behavior. Regression analysis was used as a hypothesis testing method. The results indicated the following three points. First, perception factors affect active intimate behavior in the order of favorableness, superiority, self-disclosure, and similarity. Second, perception factors affect intimate behavior will in the order of favorableness, superiority, and self-disclosure. Lastly, it was shown that a child's active intimate behavior has an influence on their intimate behavior will.

Abstract

Many studies have been done on the integral imaging pickup whose objective is to get efficiently elemental images from a lens array with respect to three-dimensional (3D) objects. In the integral imaging pickup process, it is necessary to render an elemental image from each elemental lens in a lens array for 3D objects, and then to combine them into one total image. The multiple viewpoint rendering (MVR) is one of various methods for integral imaging pickup. This method, however, has the computing and rendering time problem for obtaining element images from a lot of elemental lens. In order to solve the problems, in this paper, we propose a parallel MVR (PMVR) method to generate elemental images in a parallel through distribution of elemental lenses into multiple threads simultaneously. As a result, the computation time of integral imaging using PMVR is reduced significantly rather than a sequential approach and then we showed that the PMVR is very useful.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in skeletal muscle architecture and qualitative properties by muscle contraction force when neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of 50% MVIC was applied. Sixteen subjects (8 male, 8 female) without neuromuscular disease volunteered to participate in the study. All subjects were divided into two subgroups: control (no electrical stimulation) group and 50% maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) group. NMES training program was performed in the calf muscle three times a week for 10 weeks. Before and after the experiments, the MVIC of ankle plantar flexor was measured by the use of dynamometer, and the ultrasonography in the gastrocnemius medialis muscle was measured. The following results were obtained; MVIC was significantly increased in the electrical stimulation groups. Pennation angle, muscle density, and white area index also considerably changed in the electrical stimulation groups. In conclusion, the NMES training of 50% MVIC, comparative low level, improved the skeletal muscle architecture and the qualitative properties as well as the muscle contraction force.

Abstract

The concept of pity has been continually debated as one of the major characteristics of tragedy, as highlighted by Aristotle. Especially, this concept might be changed according to the change of drama characters, relying on times. Aristotle says that ‘pity’ must be included in the accounts of tragedy along with fear. Historically, divergent interpretations have been understood in different meanings based on the worldview of each era. This thesis attempts to explore ‘pity’ including how it has been understood and discussed since Aristotle first mentioned it, and search for a way of having pity on a person who undergoes misery until now in the times of losing the tragedy in real meaning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to measure the effect of a gestalt group meditation therapy intervention program on occupational stress and anxiety in working women aged 30 to 49 in Korea. Scientific methods were employed to test a gestalt group meditation therapy intervention program as treatment for working women in 30-40s to reduce their level of occupational stress and anxiety. The study involved 18 volunteer subjects ages of 30 to 49 years, randomly divided into two groups: (1) gestalt group meditation therapy intervention program, and (2) no program. Both groups completed a pre-test and a post-test of occupational stress scale and trait anxiety inventory. The outcome data was analyzed as quantitative information using the SPSSPC+ computer program. Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze the result in order to verify the sameness between experienced group and controlled group of pre-test scores within the groups. Also U-test comparisons were used to analyze the treatment effects. The results of this investigation indicated that (1) occupational stress scores decrease after gestalt group meditation therapy intervention program on the treatment group, and (2) trait-anxiety scores decrease after gestalt group meditation therapy intervention program on the treatment group. In summary, the gestalt group meditation therapy intervention program for career women, aged 30 to 49, in Korea could reduce the subjects' occupational stress and anxiety.

Abstract

In huge video databases, the effective video content indexing method is required. While manual indexing is the most effective approach to this goal, it is slow and expensive. Thus automatic indexing is desirable and recently various indexing tools for video databases have been developed. For efficient video content indexing, the similarity measure is an important factor. This paper presents new similarity measures between frames and proposes a new algorithm to index video content using Kullback-Leibler distance defined between two histograms. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm using Kullback-Leibler distance gives remarkable high accuracy ratios compared with several conventional algorithms to index video content.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a hierarchical method for segmenting a given 3D mesh, which hierarchically clusters sharp vertices of the mesh using the metric of geodesic distance among them. Sharp vertices are extracted from the mesh by analyzing convexity that reflects global geometry. As well as speeding up the computing time, the sharp vertices of this kind avoid the problem of local optima that may occur when feature points are extracted by analyzing the convexity that reflects local geometry. For obtaining more effective results, the sharp vertices are categorized according to the priority from the viewpoint of cognitive science, and the reasonable number of clusters is automatically determined by analyzing the geometric features of the mesh.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel method to design and implement mobile u-health system by defining the essential elements of mobile healthcare services. We choose common service elements for the proposed u-healthcare scheme and design the service platform. Especially we focus on automatic feces or urine sensing u-care scheme to prove the effectiveness of our platform. We construct the system with sensing part with a manikin and a diaper, wireless communication part with feces or urine sensing data, and coordinator system based on the u-health platform defined in this paper. Experimental results show that our scheme is useful in the area of u-care service for the handicapped, the elderly, and patients who can hardly move by themselves. In addition the designed scheme offers a realized u-care scheme with the purpose of advanced developing tools for application or service developers.

Abstract

This paper has done a study of Chinese-Korean cooperative multimedia design education. Sino-Korean school of multimedia was set up by Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) and Korea Dongseo University in October 2002.We have created “3.5 +0.5 Teaching Model”. In this model, Chinese and Korea professors take courses together. Firstly, paper points out the Chinese government policy background of Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in running schools and the development of Chinese-Korean cooperative multimedia design education in SUES. Secondly, by analyzing the multimedia design industry to understand the Chinese multi-media design education. Thirdly, paper made in-depth studies for “3.5+0.5 Teaching Model” so as to draw the experience of successes and problems. Through analysis of “Questionnaires for students’ learning and living conditions in Dongseo University in 2009” by spss16.0, paper made a research of mode of “A semester studying in Korea”. Finally, paper points out the development direction of Chinese-Korean cooperative multimedia design.

Abstract

Recently high-speed memory array based on RAM, which is a type of solid-state drive (SSD), has been introduced to handle the input/output (I/O) bottleneck. But there are only a few performance studies on RAM based SSD storage with regard to diverse workloads. In this paper, we focus on the file system for RAM based memory array based NGS (Next Generation Storage) system which is running on Linux operating system. Then we perform benchmark tests on practical file systems including Ext3, ReiserFS, XFS. The result shows XFS significantly outperforms other file systems in tests that represent the storage and data requests typically made by enterprise applications in many aspects. The experiment is used to design the dedicated file system for NGS system. The results presented here can help enterprises improve their performance significantly.

Abstract

In the midst of a continued discourse and development concerning design education and its impact on innovation and creativity, I believe that design education still holds the key to enhancing design methodology while increasing creativity by having students take on several creative roles in an interactive and enjoyable studio course. Clearly, there exist impediments that block the creative process in our standard track in design education; however, a course entitled “The Creative Workshop” can overcome such obstacles. Through this course, a student can learn the essential skills of a designer: inventive thinking, a sense of aesthetics, and a spirit of collaboration. In addressing each of the three essential elements, this course has devised role-plays in the way of projects. Simply put, students will be required to demonstrate and, therefore, express their unique creativity that may have otherwise gone muted. Such creative expression can take form in a low stakes, open forum that heralds the invaluable attribute in design such as creative freedom. As a result, the true spirit of creativity is fostered rather than mere aesthetics and styling. Moreover, through role plays, the focus shifts its center from design, allowing each student to explore the uncharted areas of one’s own creativity which may come naturally to some extend while disconcerting to others. It may prove particularly uncomfortable for Korean students whose ideas about education have been directly connected to the strict and regimented school system that stresses adherence to standardization such as the national college entrance exam. Abstract

It is important for communication networks to possess the capability to overcome failures and provide survivable services. We address modeling and analysis of performability affected by both performance and availability of system components for a token ring network under failure and repair conditions. Stochastic reward nets (SRN) is an extension of stochastic Petri nets and provides compact modeling facilities for system analysis. In this paper, hierarchical SRN modeling techniques are used to overcome state largeness problem. The upper level model is used to compute availability and the lower level model captures the performance. And Normalized Throughput Loss (NTL) is obtained for the composite ring network for each node failures occurrence as a performability measure. One of the key contributions of this paper constitutes the Petri nets modeling techniques instead of complicate numerical analysis of Markov chains and easy way of performability analysis for a token ring network under SRN reward concepts.
