Abstract

Kinesio Taping (KT) is widely used by physical therapists to treat a variety of neuromusculoskeletal disorders. In this study it was examined whether or not KT has an effect on the peak torque and muscle activity of the quadriceps muscles in healthy subjects. KT was applied to the anterior thigh and tibia of fifteen healthy males (mean age, 25.42±1.38 years, mean body height 178.58±3.03 ㎝, mean body weight 71.58±6.42 ㎏) who have no problem within past 2 months. The quadriceps peak torque was assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer while the mean data of muscle activity was measured by surface electromyography (EMG). The maximal voluntary isometric contraction was carried out on all subjects at 0°, 30° and 60° before, during, and after KT. There were no significant differences in the peak torque and mean data of quadriceps muscle(vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, and vastus medialis oblique) activity at 0°, 30° and 60° before, during and after application of KT (p>.05). From this study it could be concluded that the application of KT to the anterior thigh and tibia doesn't affect the peak torque and the muscle activity.

Abstract

Recently, there has been research to use portable digital camera to recognize objects in natural scene images, including labels or marks on a cylindrical surface. In many cases, text or logo in a label can be distorted by a structural movement of the object on which the label resides. Since the distortion in the label can degrade the performance of object recognition, the label should be rectified or restored from deformations. In this paper, a new method for label detection and restoration in digital images is presented. In the detection phase, the Hough transform is employed to detect two vertical boundaries of the label, and a horizontal edge profile is analyzed to detect upper-side and lower-side boundaries of the label. Then, the biquadratic transformation is used to restore the rectangular shape of the label. The proposed algorithm performs restoration of 3D objects in a 2D space, and it requires neither an auxiliary hardware such as 3D camera to construct 3D models nor a multi-camera to capture objects in different views. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

In this paper, attendance in distance learning courses of a cyber university has been surveyed in an effort to verify the effectiveness of distance learning. Based on survey data from 4,749 distance learning participants, major attending place, major reasons for attending online class, fidelity to online classes, attending time per week, perceived educational effectiveness, perceived and relative seriousness of problems, and other variables have been evaluated. The results indicate that perceptional seriousness of the investigated problems is not statistically important. The findings indicate that, among operational problems, self willingness and cheating are the most remarkable. In contrast, the relative seriousness of traditionally recognized problems such as H/W availability and network speed among environmental problems is least remarkable. An analysis of demographic differences such as sex, employment, and school year in terms of seriousness of problems is also performed. The results reveal the existence of statistically significant differences according to sex, employment, and school year with regard to almost all elements of environment, actual current conditions, and seriousness of problems, with the exception of some elements such as attending place and perceived fidelity.

Abstract

This paper discusses an academic study on electronic games and their incredibly vast and rapid growth over the years. It specifically addresses the evolution of electronic games from the 1960s to today, the ripple effects of electronic games, and the development of electronic game platforms. In terms of scope, the study first describes the ripple effects of the emergence of electronic games in chronological order and from the “immersion” and “convergence” perspectives, and then explores the evolution of electronic game platforms such as arcade machines, video consoles, personal computers, and mobile game devices.

Abstract

This paper is on the premise that we need objective and measurable researches on quality evaluation of serious game for users' correct selection of games fitting for their purposes, for development of competitive high-quality game, and for stable growth of game industry. At first, we looked into various characteristics of serious game, read the present situation of game market, and pro-posed the necessity of quality evaluating model for serious game. To guarantee the objectivity of the proposed models, we compared and analyzed various proposals of standard model on the basis of international standard quality-evaluating model, ISO/IEC 9126 S/W. And so we extracted quality-evaluating items for serious game that composed of 8 evaluating areas and 25 sub-attributes, and presented quality-evaluating indices of each area. The proposed quality-evaluating model was added 2 areas and 8 sub-attributes to the international standard model, and the validity of the extracted items' was verified by expert group's questionnaire. Accordingly, we expect that this paper will increase game users' satisfaction, promote the development of high-quality games, and contribute to continuous growth in serious game market.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different shoe-heel heights on the surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) during treadmill walking in female patients with patellofemoral pain (PFP). Nineteen women with PFP participated in this research. EMG signals were recorded from the VM and VL of both sides and were compared during the treadmill walking. The subjects walked on a treadmill wearing shoes of three different heel heights: 1 cm, 3 cm and 7 cm. Each subject walked on a treadmill for five minutes at a speed of 2 km/hour with three minutes resting intervals between consecutive trials. The data were analyzed by one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance. The results of the present study indicate that EMG data of the VM and VL of female patients with PFP did improve with an increase in the height of the shoe heel, which were statistically significant. Additionally, the EMG activity of VM increased more dramatically than that of VL associated with the task of walking with high-heeled shoes on the treadmill. This study suggests that the type of high-heeled shoes is related to the VM and VL muscle activation patterns contributing to knee joint pathologies in female patients with PFP.

Abstract

Skyline queries are an important new search capability for multi-dimensional databases. Most of the previous works have focused on processing skyline queries over static data set. However, most of the real applications deal with the dynamic data set. Since dynamic data set constantly changes as time passes, the continuous skyline computation over dynamic data set becomes ever more complicated. In this paper, we propose a multiple layer grids method for continuous skyline computation (MLGCS) that maintains multiple layer grids to manage the dynamic data set. The proposed method divides the work space into multiple layer grids and creates the skyline influence region in the grid of each layer. In the continuous environment, the continuous skyline queries are only handled when the updating data points are in the skyline influence region of each layer grid. Experiments based on various data distributions show that our proposed method outperforms the existing methods.

Abstract

This study details the neuroscientific concept of somatosensation, general sensory stimulation therapy and virtual reality therapy. Somatosensation is a method that the human body uses to accept information from the inner and outer parts of the body. A traditional sensory stimulation therapy was designed to maximize neural recovery, but the neural recovery is most effective when the therapeutic environment is similar to real life. The virtual reality provides natural environment that users may perceive as meaningful and even participants with significant impairment can perform some of the activities of their daily lives within the virtual environment. The virtual reality will become a complementary part of somatosensory rehabilitation.

Abstract

Recently, biological researches are required to deal with a large scale of data. While scientists used classical experimental approaches for researches in the past, it is possible to get more sophisticated observations easily with the convergence of information technologies and biology. The study on diseases is one of the most important issues of the life science. Conventional services and databases provide users with information such as classification of diseases, symptoms, and medical treatments through the Web. However, it is hard to connect or develop them for other new services because they have independent and different criteria. It may be a factor that interferes the development of biology. In this paper, we propose integrated data structures for the disease databases. We also design and implement a novel directory system for diseases as an infrastructure for developing the new diseases services.
