Abstract

This study establishes a simple Causal Map in order to understand the structure of Social Network Services(SNS). From this, the paper proposes a simulation with drawing Simulation Model and it examines whether a Dunbar Number is available for the emergence of collective intelligence based on an on-line network. Through my analytical research, it turn out both Closed SNS and Open SNS have their own Dunbar Number. However, it appear that Open SNS can expand infinitely as it has a unique property namely weak tie. This implies that it is significant for a system or policy to be developed in order to overcome the problem of Dunbar Number, whereas restricting the extension of a network by considering the Dunbar Number would have a negative impact on emergence of collective intelligence.

Abstract

This study examines A-list users in the Twitter network of National Assembly members in South Korea. An examination of some socio-geographic characteristics of these A-list users indicates that the distribution of these users in terms of their geographic location and social status can be understood in the context of the Korean social structure. In addition, an examination of Tweets posted by these users shows that half of these users had negative attitudes toward the current administration and that some Tweets contained emotional terms.

Abstract

This study investigated what factors affect consumers’ decision making concerning the adoption of smart TVs. For this purpose, the integrated adoption model that consists of six major constructs from the diffusion of innovation theory (DIT), the technology acceptance model (TAM), and the model of innovation resistance(MIR) was employed. To collect data, an online survey was used. Data collected were analyzed with the structural equation model (SEM). Findings showed that the innovativeness has a positive influence on the both of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. It was also shown that both of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use affect the intention to use smart TVs in a positive way. The innovation resistance has a negative influence on the intention to use. The mediating role of the innovation resistance was also found. The implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract

The animal naming test (ANT) is known to be influenced not only by age, gender, and education but only by ethnicity, culture, and language. Thus, population-specific norm considering these variables needs to be developed for Korean-speaking elderly. We evaluated 185 healthy elderly people with five measures. Education was the single statistically independent correlate of the total number of words (R2 = .312, p = .038). After adjusting for education, there was slightly significant negative correlation (r = -.215, p = .049) between age and total number of words. Mean number of words produced was 13.71±3.09. The production frequency was negatively correlated with the typicality rating (r = -0.41, p < .05). The concrete and exact scoring rule could be set up in the comparison of naming performance between a normal and patient with neuro-linguistic disorder and its data could be utilized in a differential diagnosis for patients with neurological disorders.

Abstract

The concept of vegetation freeboard equivalence (VFE) is presented from the comparison between the rise in stage with/without vegetation and the freeboard height under design discharge conditions. In South Korea, the freeboard height of large, medium and small rivers is defined as a function of river discharge. Two models are used for this analysis of flood stage with and without vegetation: the 1-D model HEC-RAS and the 2-D model RMA-2. Both models are applied to three river study sites of the Geum River in South Korea as representative sites for a large, a medium and a small river. The analysis shows that without vegetation, both models provide comparable results and the calculated results are in very good agreement with the design configuration. The vegetation effects on the medium river are less significant, and the freeboard is adequate to contain the rise in stage from the added floodplain vegetation in large rivers. The concept of vegetation freeboard equivalence is therefore useful for the analysis of flood river stages after the restoration of channels with increased floodplain vegetation.

Abstract

Korea has entered into the Post Catching-up era and the necessity of new innovation strategy in response is being raised. This study argues the necessity of new innovation strategy and discusses the issue of co-ordination between R&D and Human Resource for that as the key factor. From empirical analysis, there seems to be restricted inflow of outstanding human resources to manufacturing sectors and lowering effectiveness of major even with the improved compatibility between major and job. Especially, it is severe in the industries with high R&D investment. It can be interpreted as an incoordination of the technological innovation efforts from the aspect of R&D investment with human resource utilization from the aspect of new human resource. The analytical result and interpretation suggests that there should be more active improvement on the co-ordination between innovative manufacturers’ efforts and human resource utilization, in order to keep sustainable development.

Abstract

This study examines whether the infant mortality rate and life expectancy at birth are affected by health care expenditure in Korea. It can be provisionally concluded that the infant mortality rate tends to be affected by the health system itself in the long-run, whereas life expectancy at birth is immediately affected by health-related facilities such as the number of physicians and number of hospital beds in the short-run. Therefore, the health-related system should be well established to improve the infant mortality rate. On the contrary, physical capital such as life-prolonging medical technologies has to be accumulated to improve life expectancy at birth.

Abstract

Burnout is a severe psychological and physical syndrome that occurs in response to prolonged stress at work. It brings enormous costs to both organizations and individuals because it negatively impacts employees’ job attitudes and leads to undesirable behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the negative effects of job burnout on the organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behavior of social worker. Organizational citizenship behaviors are efforts by employees above and beyond what is expected. For the research, burnout was consisted of emotional exhaustion(EE), depersonalization(PA) and diminished personal accomplishment(DP) by Maslach and Jackson’s MBI. This study analyzed 342 social workers in private social welfare organizations by survey. The results of this study were summarized as follows: Social Workers had negative correlation to burnout on the organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behavior. Especially, EE, PA and DP had a negative effect on the organizational commitment; PA and DP had a negative effect on the organizational citizenship behavior. This study finally discussed theoretical implications for future study and practical implications for burnout strategies on the results.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to give some crisis communication strategies for effective cooperation and coordination among the countries in global society. Based on the theoretical discussions, in this paper, five strategic recommendations toward improving crisis communication are offered as follows; First, it is necessary that a small, dynamic team for global crisis communication function be established among the nearby countries. Second, for understanding the neighboring country's crisis situation, it is needed that the common crisis communication organizations which play an important role of disseminating accurate information and giving the collaborative efforts in each country have to be made. Third, for effective crisis management, an appropriate infrastructure that includes open and effective communication channels among different levels and across organizations must be in place. Fourth, mass communication should fulfill a variety of functions in society and provide information, interpretation of events, and its influence, etc for cooperating and coordinating the crisis management. Fifth, to acquire a correct understanding of the bordering country's crisis and calamities, intercultural education program should be established in the crisis communication system.

Abstract

The emergence of the Internet has provided a new outlet for consumers who experience service failure from products and services, augmenting the traditional options of entry, voice and action. Consumers’ negative word of mouth through online (word-of-mouse or eWOM) far exceeds traditional word of mouth (WOM) in respect of its potential effectiveness, speed and spread. This paper tries to figure out the service failure themes in the health care industry by analyzing online word-of-mouse using the critical incidents technique (CIT). Complaint themes in the area of healthcare are identified and analyzed. The results identify that major complaint theme differed according to the site type. Also, the findings indicate that delivery and customer services are critical issues when consumer makes negative WOM.

Abstract

In digital contents distribution environments, a user authentication is an important security primitive to allow only authenticated user to use right services by checking the validity of membership. For example, in Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) environments, it is required to provide an access control according to the policy of content provider. Remote user authentication and key agreement scheme is used to validate the contents accessibility of a user. We propose a novel user authentication scheme using smart cards providing a secure access to multimedia contents service. Each user is authenticated using a subset of attributes which are issued in the registration phase without revealing individual’s identity. Our scheme provides the anonymous authentication and the various permissions according to the combination of attributes which are assigned to each user. In spite of more functionality, the result of performance analysis shows that the computation and communication cost is very low. Using this scheme, the security of contents distribution environments in the client-server model can be significantly improved.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel method that automatically generates real character images to familiarize existing OCR systems with new fonts. At first, we generate synthetic character images using a simple degradation model. The synthetic data is used to train an OCR engine, and the trained OCR is used to recognize and label real character images that are segmented from ideal document images. Since the OCR engine is unable to recognize accurately all real character images, a substring matching method is employed to fix wrongly labeled characters by comparing two strings; one is the string grouped by recognized characters in an ideal document image, and the other is the ordered string of characters which we are considering to train and recognize. Based on our method, we build a system that automatically generates 2350 most common Korean and 117 alphanumeric characters from new fonts. The ideal document images used in the system are postal envelope images with characters printed in ascending order of their codes. The proposed system achieved a labeling accuracy of 99%. Therefore, we believe that our system is effective in facilitating the generation of numerous character samples to enhance the recognition rate of existing OCR systems for fonts that have never been trained.

Abstract

Science fiction films touch coming-future themes, particularly those referring specifically to futuristic technology and its influence over human life. Dealing with the resistance of the replicants in the approaching millennium, Blade Runner brings the feat of modern civilization into doubt through the image of the dystopian future. In Blade Runner, a city is filled with waste, pollution, and dirt and a corrosive rain falls from the polluted clouds. Adorno criticizes contemporary society and its civilization. Characterizing advanced capitalist society by its total administration penetrating into every sphere of life, he contends that modern society promotes alienation, atomization, conformism, and fatalism. Blade Runner provides a chance to contemplate the problems of modern society, proposed by Adorno's critical works. Therefore, this paper attempts to analyze futuristic characteristics described in the film with Adorno's critique of modern society.

Abstract

In this paper, a unit cell for low pass filter design by using composite right and left-handed transmission line in conductor-backed coplanar waveguide is proposed. The characteristics of the unit cell are analyzed in order to design a low pass filter in small sizes. By changing the sizes of the unit cell, the parameters of right-handed and left-handed immittance components are changed and the desired characteristics of the unit cell are achieved. The equivalent circuit of the unit cell is extracted and analyzed either. As a result, the simulation results of the unit cell and the equivalent circuit are almost identified. The movement and energy distributions of electromagnetic field are shown to confirm the property of the unit cell. In the end, a low pass filter is demonstrated by cascading three proposed unit cells, which shows cutoff frequency of 1.53GHz and deep attenuation from 2.23GHz to 4.49GHz lower than -50dB.
