Abstract

Mutual Exclusion is one of the most studied topics in distributed systems where processes communicate by asynchronous message passing. It is often necessary for multiple processes at different sites to access a shared resource or data called a critical section (CS) in distributed systems. A number of algorithms have been proposed to solve the mutual exclusion problem in distributed systems. In this paper, we propose the new algorithm which is modified from Garg's algorithm[1] thus works properly in a fault-tolerant system. In our algorithm, after electing the token generator, the elected process generates a new token based on the information of the myreqlist which is kept by every process and the reqdone which is received during election. Consequently, proposed algorithm tolerates any number of process failures and also does even when only one process is alive.

Abstract

Cloud Computing can be viewed as a dynamically-scalable pool of resources. Virtualization is one of the key technologies enabling Cloud Computing functionalities. Virtual machines (VMs) scheduling and allocation is essential in Cloud Computing environment. In this paper, two dynamic VMs scheduling and allocating schemes are presented and compared. One dynamically on-demand allocates VMs while the other deploys optimal threshold to control the scheduling and allocating of VMs. The aim is to dynamically allocate the virtual resources among the Cloud Computing applications based on their load changes to improve resource utilization and reduce the user usage cost. The schemes are implemented by using SimPy, and the simulation results show that the proposed adaptive scheme with one threshold can be effectively applied in a Cloud Computing environment both performance-wise and cost-wise.

Abstract

For a library to be able provide information services and fulfill its function as a knowledge convergence center capable of responding to various information demands, the development of next-generation information systems based on the latest information and communication technology is needed. The development of mobile information services using portable devices such smart phones and tablet PCs and information systems which incorporate the concepts of cloud computing, SaaS (Software as a Service), annotation and Library2.0 is also required. This paper describes a library information system that utilizes collective intelligence and cloud computing. The information system developed for this study adopts the SaaS-based cloud computing service concept to cope with the shift in the mobile service paradigm in libraries and the explosion of electronic data. The strengths of such a conceptual model include the sharing of resources, support of multi-tenants, and the configuration and support of metadata. The user services are provided in the form of software on-demand. To test the performance of the developed system, the efficiency analysis and TTA certification test were conducted. The results of performance tests, It is encouraging that, at least up to 100MB, the job time is approximately linear and with only a moderate overhead of less than one second. The system also passed the level-3 or higher criteria in the certification test, which includes the SaaS maturity, performance and application program functions.

Abstract

It is not easy for users to effectively have information that is semantically related but scattered on the Web. To obtain qualitatively improved information in web pages, it is necessary to integrate information that is heterogeneous but semantically related. In this study, we propose a method that provides XML-based metadata to users through integration of multiple heterogeneous Web pages. The metadata generated from the proposed system is obtained by integrating different heterogeneous information into a single page, using entity identification based on ontology. A wheelchair information integration system for disabled people is implemented to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. The implemented system provides an integrated web page from multiple web pages as a type of XML document.

Abstract

Error surfaces provide us with very important information for training of feed-forward neural networks (FNNs). In this paper, we draw the contour plots of various error or objective functions for training of FNNs. Firstly, when applying FNNs to classifications, the weakness of mean-squared error is explained with the viewpoint of error contour plot. And the classification figure of merit, mean log-square error, cross-entropy error, and n-th order extension of cross-entropy error objective functions are considered for the contour plots. Also, the recently proposed target node method is explained with the viewpoint of contour plot. Based on the contour plots, we can explain characteristics of various error or objective functions when training of FNNs proceeds.

Abstract

We present a novel watercolor painting drawing system which can work even on low powered computing machine such as tablet PC. Most digital watercolor systems are generated to perform on desktop, not low powered mobile computing system such as iPad. Our system can be utilized for art education besides professional painters. Our system is not a naïve imitation of real watercolor painting, but handles with properties of watercolor such as diffusion, boundary salience, and mixing of water and pigment.

Abstract

Recently the unprecedented progress of Android platform and Google Play has brought more opportunities for individual mobile game developers. When playing an Android 3D game, users can accidentally hit HOME Key or BACK Key or receive an incoming message. Subsequently, another screen will appear on top and make the game application lose focus, or the operating system pause that game. These interruption events may also lead to the loss of game information or the game runs out of user control if that game cannot catch interruption events itself and resume at the exact time. As same as other mobile platforms, Android platform also provides Activity Lifecycle methods to help the game application control interruption problems. However, these methods are not adequate to solve all the interruption events. By implementing ANDCube game, we examine most of the possible interruption cases and propose some solutions to help Android game developers avoid some common interruption cases. Concurrently, we show the ways how a game application can catch all unavoidable interruption events and effectively resume from interruption to obtain a high quality game.

This study compared cross-national Twitter use between Korea and Japan. The main exploratory variables were a) cultural traits and b) disclosure of geographic information. Twitter use was measured by the degree of reciprocity and the numbers of Tweets, followings, and followers. Data were collected using API-based software and analyzed with independent samples t-tests. Content analysis was conducted to validate the findings. The results indicate that Korean and Japanese users employ their own communication strategies reflecting their cultural orientation.

Abstract

In recent decades, analyzing the activities of human brain achieved some accomplishments by using the functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) technique. fMRI data provide a sequence of three-dimensional images related to human brain’s activity which can be used to detect instantaneous cognitive states by applying machine learning methods. In this paper, we propose a new approach for distinguishing human’s cognitive states such as “observing a picture” versus “reading a sentence” and “reading an affirmative sentence” versus “reading a negative sentence”. Since fMRI data are high dimensional (about 100,000 features in each sample), extremely sparse and noisy, feature selection is a very important step for increasing classification accuracy and reducing processing time. We used the Fisher Discriminant Ratio to select the most powerful discriminative features from some Regions of Interest (ROIs). The experimental results showed that our approach achieved the best performance compared to other feature extraction methods with the average accuracy approximately 95.83% for the first study and 99.5% for the second study.

Abstract

The heart is a major dose‐limiting organ for radiotherapy of cancer in the thoracic region. The purpose of this study was to examine the protective effect of tranilast on the radiation‐induced heart fibrosis model using the C57BL/6 murine strain. A significant reduction in the expression of TGF‐β1, collagen type Ⅰ and collagen type Ⅲ was observed in the radiation plus tranilast group. The authors also suggest the use of tranilast in a clinical trial for the prevention of radiation-induced heart fibrosis.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Kinesio taping(KT) on the maximal power and muscle activity of erector spinae. 30 male subjects were allocated in this study and randomly divided into experimental and control groups. All subjects were measured for maximal power of trunk extensors and muscle activities of iliocostalis lumborum, longissimus, and multifidus between pre and post experiment. Maximal power was calculated using a dynamometer(Power Track Ⅱ, JTECH medical, USA), and muscle activities were calculated using a surface EMG(MP150 BIOPAC System Inc. CA. USA). Maximal power of trunk extensor showed no significant difference between pre and post intervention in both groups(p>0.05). Muscle activity of iliocostalis lumborum, longissimus, and multifidus showed no significant difference between pre and post intervention(p>0.05). Finally, there was no significant difference between Experimental and control group in maximal power and muscle activity of trunk extensor. These study results suggested that KT did not affect increase or decrease in maximal power and muscle activities of trunk extensor.

Abstract

Radiation has been an effective tool for treating cancer for a long time. Radiation therapy induces DNA damage within cancer cells and destroys their ability to reproduce. Radiation therapy is often combined with other treatments, like surgery and chemotherapy. Here, we describe the effects of radiation and histone deacetylase inhibitor, Trichostain A, on cell cycle regulation in hepatoma cells. The combinatorial treatment of radiation and Trichostain A induced cell cycle arrest and thereby increasing the hepatoma cell death. Furthermore, the regulatory effects of radiation and Trichostatin A on cell cycle applied in cell type specifically. These results suggest that the treatment of radiation and Trichostatin A may play a central role in hepatoma cell death and might be a good remedy to improve the efficiency of radiation therapy.

Abstract

In this paper, we conducted cross-cultural studies on digital images, which is an important element of the user interface. We brought in the schema theory to explain the cross-cultural difference in expressing and perceiving digital images. Participant-ethnography, in-depth interview, and card sorting were conducted to explore how expression and perception of images are influenced by schemas. Our results of qualitative studies indicate that there are differences in schemas between cultures depending on the topic of expression and perception. With these results, we suggest globalization and localization strategies for websites.

Abstract

The present study aims to explore career maturity and influencing factors among elementary schoolers from poor families in Korea. Data are from 249 welfare recipient children in 10 administrative districts of Incheon. Scores of the work attitudes subdomain was lower than other aspects of career maturity including planning, self-appraisal, and independence in career decision-making. In the full sample, those in the higher academic years showed greater career maturity, planning, and self-appraisal, and those with greater parent attachment showed higher levels of self-appraisal. In separate analyses by gender, parent attachment showed greater influence on girls’ career maturity. Finding from the separate analyses on lower vs. higher academic years (i.e. grades) revealed that parent attachment and female were associated with career maturity among lower graders, while academic achievement was associated with career maturity, planning, and self-appraisal among those in higher graders. Findings lend support to parental involvement in career education. Poor children might have limited perceptions of career focused on satisfying economic necessities. Career education should pay attention in helping them expand perceptions of the values of career.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a technique to extract the title areas from book cover images. A typical book cover image may contain text, pictures, diagrams as well as complex and irregular background. In addition, the high variability of character features such as thickness, font, position, background and tilt of the text also makes the text extraction task more complicated. Therefore, we propose a two steps efficient method that uses Histogram of Oriented Gradients and color information to find the title areas. Firstly, text localization is carried out to find the title candidates. Finally, refinement process is performed to find the sufficient components of title areas. To obtain the best result, we also use other constraints about the size, ratio between the length and width of the title. We achieve encouraging results of extracted title regions from book cover images which prove the advantages and efficiency of the proposed method.
