Abstract

The sect of Donghak known as Cheondogyo is an important and widespread folk religion on the Korean Peninsula in modern times. The thought of people in Korea has been markedly influenced by Donghak broadly and Cheondogyo in particular. Cheondogyo regards their God as the Supreme God. However, in recent years, there has been vigorous debate in the academic world as to whether Cheondogyo cosmology should be characterized as monistic or dualistic. The answer to that question would also indicate whether their understanding of God is reflective of monism or dualism. However, creating a dichotomy between heavenly monism and heavenly dualism ignores a key problem: the consistency of the fundamental nature of God and Jigi (Ultimate Energy). God and Jigi are understood as the same and consistent in terms of fundamental nature, and the relationship between the two is that of oneness rather than twoness. On this basis, Choe Je-u constructed a personal ideological system spanning cosmology, mind theory, and Gongbu theory.
