Abstract

As a unique god formed under the influence of the Japanese idea of combining gods and Buddhas, "Gozu Tennou (牛頭天王)" has maintained prosperity throughout different periods such as Heian, Kamakura, Muromachi, Warring States, and Edo. "Gozu Tennou"developed in Japan in stages such as his identities as "Tenjin" brought to Gion by the Yasaka family in the Asuka period, "Gyuzu Tenno" who merged with the Buddhist Medicine Buddha for the first time from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period, and "Susanoo (スサノオ)" after the second Shinto Buddhist practice from the middle to late Kamakura period to the early Muromachi period. Another development can be observed from the Muromachi to the Edo period, when, under the background that Japanese Confucian scholars advocated the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism, "Gozu Tennou" came to be regarded as the incarnation of Shennong, and this was a third combination with Shennong.
