The growing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, especially significant Large Language Models like ChatGPT, into the realm of research and manuscript creation is indeed noteworthy. To provide clear directives, we offer the following comprehensive guidelines addressing the interplay between AI and authorship, specifically tailored for submissions to JISTaP.
These guidelines will be effective as of October 1, 2023. Authors are urged to adhere diligently to these guidelines when submitting manuscripts to JISTaP. By doing so, we ensure transparent documentation of AI's role while upholding ethical standards. As AI continues to evolve, these guidelines will adapt to reflect the evolving landscape.
Acknowledging AI's Presence, Clarifying Authorship
AI as Authors: Recognizing AI's capabilities, it is prudent to clarify that AI tools, including LLMs, DO NOT meet the criteria for authorship. Thus, attributing authorship to AI tools is not appropriate and should be avoided.
Distribution of Responsibilities: The scope of authorship encompasses responsibilities that extend beyond AI's computational prowess. These include intellectual contributions, conflict resolution, and adherence to legal standards, aspects better suited to human authors.
Transparent Integration: Instances involving substantive AI contributions to manuscript elements call for transparent disclosure of AI's role in the process.
Crafting Manuscripts in the Age of AI
Defining AI's Role: Authors are encouraged to articulate AI's role within the confines of the "Materials and Methods" section, outlining specific contributions. Flexibility is extended, allowing integration within contextual sections like the introduction, if deemed appropriate.
Authorial Responsibility: Despite AI's involvement, human authors retain ultimate responsibility for content accuracy, originality, and ethical integrity.
Acknowledging AI's Contribution: Manuscript submissions must duly acknowledge the utilization of AI tools. Within the "Acknowledgments" section, provide acknowledgment of AI's role, supplemented by a comprehensive explanation within the "Materials and Methods" section.
Alignment with COPE Principles
In Tune with COPE: These guidelines align seamlessly with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) standpoint. The author remains the key arbiter of content, even in light of AI's collaborative role.
