Abstract

When utilizing a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for tunnelling work, unexpected ground conditions can be encountered that are not predicted in the design stage. These include fractured zones or mixed ground conditions that are likely to reduce the stability of TBM excavation, and result in considerable economic losses such as construction delays or increases in costs. Minimizing these potential risks during tunnel construction is therefore a crucial issue in any mechanized tunneling project. This paper proposed the potential risk events that may occur due to risky ground conditions. A resistivity survey is utilized to predict the risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face during construction. The potential risk events are then evaluated based on their occurrence probability and impact. A TBM risk management system that can suggest proper solution methods (measures) for potential risk events is also developed. Multi-Criterion Decision Making (MCDM) is utilized to determine the optimal solution method (optimal measure) to handle risk events. Lastly, an actual construction site, at which there was a risk event during Earth Pressure-Balance (EPB) Shield TBM construction, is analyzed to verify the efficacy of the proposed system.

Abstract

This paper concerns the development of an optimized TBM segmental lining design system for a subsea tunnel. The subsea tunnel is normally laid down under the sea water and submarine ground which consists of soil or rock. The design system is the series of process which can predict segmental lining member forces by ANN (artificial neural network system), analyze suitable section for the designated ground, construction and tunnel conditions. Finally, this lining design system aims to be connected with a BIM system for designing the subsea tunnel automatically. The lining member forces are predicted based on the ANN which was calculated by a FEM (finite element analysis) and it helps designers determine its segmental lining dimension easily without any further FE calculations.

Abstract

A new testing equipment is designed to investigate the characteristics of the drainage fabric which is used in the tunnel drain system. The equipment is possible to model the loading as well as boundary conditions of the shotcrete precisely and it follows the general guideline of ASTM D4716 so that the interface between shotcrete and concrete lining retains the real situation in the tunnel site. Using the real loading conditions and surface irregularities, the flow rate and its capacity of the regular fabric has been estimated. A composite drainage fabric having geogrid inside was also used to investigate the flow rate and its efficiency. The advantages of the composite fabric compared with the regular one have been demonstrated using the experimental data and brief outline of the future work is finally proposed.

Abstract

When the queue length of congestion vehicles in tunnel fire is extended beyond tunnel length, the capacity of smoke control system needs to be increased in line with ventilation resistance. However, the vehicle queue length is not defined , so a rational equation is necessary in current fire prevention guideline. This study is intended to propose an equation to calculate the queue length considering the number of vehicles in queue in tunnel fire and evaluate the applicability by tunnel length as well. When it comes to normal tunnel, it is necessary to compare the vehicle queue length with tunnel length up to the length of 1,200 m in a bid to avoid applying the vehicle queue length excessively in case of fire. As a result of evaluation of applicability to model a tunnel, saving the number of jet fan for smoke control appeared to be effective. Besides, quantitative approach to explain the vehicle queue length through the relationship between the percentage of large vehicles and tunnel length was presented. Consequently, when the queue length of the congestion vehicles exceeds the tunnel length in determining the capacity of smoke control system in case of fire, the number of vehicles beyond the tunnel length needs to be excluded from estimating the ventilation resistance by vehicles.

Abstract

This study analyzed a monitoring data, based on the initial limit values of monitoring in subway, of earth pressure and pore water pressure. The data is obtained from 8 sections of the Seoul metropolitan subway line No 6, 7 and 9 in about 5 years. Also, a research is performed to set up the limit values of management monitoring, which will be applied to management monitoring in tunnel, through comparing the limit values of overseas management monitoring data and that of domestic management monitoring data. And the result obtained from comparison show that the safety phase is 60% of allowable pressure, the attention phase is 80% of allowable pressure and the precision analysis phase is 100% of allowable pressure. Also, we presented a method of management monitoring by the absolute value which can be easily applied easily in practical affairs.

Abstract

This paper presents a case study on the ground settlement and volume loss estimation for slurry pressure balanced shield TBM tunnelling in weathered zone of granite rock. Settlement at each stage of shield tunnelling was analyzed and the volume losses and settlement trough factors were estimated from observations. In addition, using the existing volume loss evaluation method in literature, volume losses were estimated considering ground properties and actual driving parameters. Most of ground settlement occurred during passage of shield skin passage and after backfill grouting, and the measured total volume loss and trough curves appeared to coincide with literature. Shield and tail loss obtained from field measurement were found to be around 90% and 60% of the predictions, where tail loss indicated larger deviation than shield loss.

Abstract

As spreading of train concrete ballast leads to the increase resounding friction noise, an porous sound absorbing block is applied in urban train tunnel as a counterparts against the friction noise. Three steps of major variables tests for an optimal mix design of the block are conducted to pursue the light weight of the block. Pilot property tests of the block for the cases of the fly-ash only as lightweight aggregates are carried satisfying KRT(Korean Rail Transit) and new KRS(Korean Railway Standards). Based on the results of pilot tests, required structural strength and admixture effects are evaluated. Additionally, typical lightweight aggregates are replaced so that lightweight and strength are improved for serviceability of poor working conditions and proper maintenance in urban train tunnel.

Abstract

Utility tunnels have been employed in Korea since the 1970s and start to make trouble with structural safety and serviceability. Recently, tunnel enlargement has consequently been proposed due to the impending problems. However there are little study on box type utility tunnels except traffic tunnels. A 2D finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate ground behavior which depends on enlargement size and stiffness by one-side enlargement of the utility tunnel. Settlement scale increased with larger enlargement size and less stiff ground conditions. The observed settlement characteristics due to enlargement are similar to that suggested by Clough & Schmidt (1981). The settlement width is more affected by enlargement size than ground condition.

Abstract

Ground water is one of important parameters in the designs of underpass structures because urban areas are characterized by soil ground which is relatively permeable than rock ground and a high level of ground water due to low elevation. Therefore, it is important properly to predict variations of the ground water when they can affect underpass structures. In this study, a series of numerical analyses are performed to predict the variations of ground water levels considering the degree of surface imperviousness and LID(Low Impact Development) application. In turn the stability of underground structure is assessed using predicted ground water level. The results show that an increase in the impervious surface area decreases the ground water level. The application of permeable pavement as a LID facility increases the ground water level, improving the infiltration capacity of rainfall into the ground. Seasonal variations of the ground water level are also verified in numerical simulation. The results of this study suggest that reasonable designs of underpass structures can be obtained with the suitable prediction and application of the ground water level considering the surface characteristics.

Abstract

This paper is focused on the determination of friction parameter which is a predominant factor in the design of inflatable structure system. This inflatable structure system is very valuably used to protect passively and rapidly the possibilities of tunnel damages by flooding threats and unusual leakage to be occurred during and after underground infrastructure construction. In particular, this system should be necessary in subsea tunnel. This study presents the experimental results obtained from the relative friction characteristics tests of the fabric materials that constitute the inflatable structure. In order to evaluate the relative friction behaviour of the inflatable structure system, friction tests and scaled model tunnel friction tests are carried out. The friction tests are carried out to determine the friction coefficient for different surface conditions between tunnel and inflatable structure. These friction coefficients are then evaluated and compared with the result obtained from the model tunnel friction tests. Interaction behaviours between tunnel and system are also reviewed and described in this study. The results clearly show that the friction coefficients derived from scaled model slippage tests are about 12% lower than values obtained from the friction tests. In addition, this study will be necessary to verify the real friction behaviour with prototype tests before applying in practice.
