Abstract

This study attempts to compare the National Library of Korea (NLK)'s cataloging in publication(CIP) records with their permanent records in the National Library of Korea(NLK)'s online public access catalogue(OPAC) database. This study compares the description of records in the NLK CIP versus NLK OPAC in terms of similarities and differences in the bibliographic elements for each record. The study selected the NLK's CIP records from November to December 2008, allowing to publish the registered CIP titles and also the NLK to make the records avaliable in their OPAC database. The finding indicate that libraries that use NLK's CIP records in their copy cataloging activity should not rely 100 per cent on the records. Verifications and modifications need to be carried out to ensure accuracy and quality of their catalogue records.

Abstract

The conspectus, based on a set number of subject descriptors derived essentially from LC subject classifications, provides a consistent framework within which libraries could report subject intensity. While library collection development has been benefitted by using this conspectus, its effectiveness in this digital era is under controversy. The purpose of this study is to survey the concepts and the various types of conspectus in library collection development and to test the applicability of a revised conspectus model to electronic resource management in libraries. For this, the focus was especially put on investigating the characteristics of electronic resources as considered the collection depth usually identified in collection development policies. Previous research has been also surveyed to consolidate their outcomes in order to design a matrix model of conspectus, which put the characteristics, persistence, and collection level in consideration in oder for the design of the conspectus model.

Abstract

This paper identifies some natural habits and patterns of children's and adolescents' information seeking and use by drawing a wide range of studies conducted with children and adolescents as study participants. The patterns reported here indicate that children's and adolescents' information seeking and use are affected by the nature of information tasks, the qualities of access tools, their cognitive ability to seek and use information, and their prior knowledge and experience about the tasks and topics given. The findings should provide insights for identifying future research issues as well as for programming the information environments particularly conducive to learning.
