Abstract

In some studies regarding acculturation strategies developed Berry(1997), not the preference for integration, but the preference for assimilation showed the best adjustment, which is different from the results of the majority of studies. For the reason of these results, we supposed that when the people of the host society expect the minority members to be assimilated to the host society and the minority members have very similar culture to the host society, the preference for assimilation in the minority members would show the best adjustment. And we tested this hypothesis with Korean-Chinese who had very similar culture to Korean culture and Han-Chinese who had very different culture from Korean culture. For two hundred and twenty five students(63 Korean-Chinese and 162 Han-Chinese), we asked them to complete a questionnaire including Acculturation Strategies Scale, Psychological Well-being Scale, and Depression Inventory. Data from the survey were analysed using two-way ANOVA. As a result, the interaction effect of acculturation strategies and ethnic types affected both of psychological well-being and depression. In details, for Korean-Chinese students, the preference for assimilation showed the highest levels of psychological well-being and the lowest levels of depression, but the preference for integration showed the lowest levels of psychological well-being and the highest levels of depression. For Han-Chinese students, the preference for integration showed the highest levels of psychological well-being and the lowest levels of depression, and the preference for marginalization showed the lowest levels of psychological well-being and the highest levels of depression. We discussed the meanings of the results, implications, and interventions to help chinese students adjust Korean society.

Secondly, there were statistically significant differences in personality characteristics based on the demographic variables especially age and the term of residence in South Korea. Thirdly, three distinct groups were extracted from the K-means cluster analysis. The first group was characterized with emotional-unstability and negative emotionality. And the North Korean female refugees in the second group hesitated to enter into and maintain proper relationships with south korean, while they were unlikely to accept norms and rules in South Korea. The third group, characterized by higher emotional stability, ego-strength, and agreeableness, was met normal range in all the scale of SPFQ. Finally, each three groups were showed statistically significant differences in psychological adaptation scales(self-identity and resilience). We expected that these results contributed to explore the psychological and the political plans for North Korean female refugees' settlement in South Korea.

Abstract

This study was designed to look into whether there is any mediated effect of psychological well-being and empowerment on the path of the negative emotions of mothers from multi-cultural families turning into the life satisfaction and tried to demonstrate empirically factors to mitigate the decline in the life satisfaction due to negative emotions of mothers from multi-cultural families. In addition, we verified the differences of psychological factors according to the characteristics of the sociology of population of mothers from multi-cultural families. For this, the survey was conducted with 400 mothers from multi-cultural families across the nation. The results are as follows. First, in case of negative emotions, there were differences among groups depending on ages, years of marriage and educational background. In case of psychological well-being and empowerment, there were differences among groups with different age, years of marriage, their own or their spouse's educational background. Second, as a result of looking into the path through which negative emotions turned into life satisfaction, there were the path effects between negative emotions and empowerment, between negative emotions and life satisfaction, and between psychological well-being and life satisfaction. This means that dealing properly with negative emotions can have positive impacts on the three dimensions of psychological well-being, empowerment, and eventually the life satisfaction. This study is meaningful in that it took psychological factors of mothers from multi-cultural families into consideration and the results can be used as useful data to come up with political measures for mothers from multi-cultural families in the future.
