"Yellow Peril" in Russian Far East in the Beginning of the 20th Century: Russians' Attitudes toward Korean Immigration and Settlement

Abstract
After the colonization of Russian Far East, Russia wanted intensive colonization of the region. Russia wanted to have the region populated by Russians but it was populated by yellow races such as the Chinese and the Korean. This was the undesirable situation from the viewpoint of Russian security. So-called "yellow peril" came from this situation. This ideology became forceful after the Russian defeat from Russo-Japanese War. The Chinese was dangerous because she had much population. The Japanese was dangerous because she was very forceful. But the Korean was dangerous because she can be instrument of forceful Japan. From each of these motives, yellow peoples became unwelcomed habitants of the Russian Far East. And This sentiments was vigorously expressed by, for example, Unterberger, governor-general of the Russian Far East, Merkulov, Russian high official and it lead to oppressive policy toward yellow race immigrants. The Korean and the Chinese became victims of this policy because they wanted to have settlements in Russian Far East.
