Abstract
This paper intends to reconstruct how the gender was systematized in Korean dominant thoughts through the process of its institutionalization, which was one way of social unification in the early Joseon. The project of categorizing and readjusting 'husband and wife' and 'man and women' was promoted in biological and social phases. That is, the location of 'husband and wife' was settled in the context of establishing family customs and become hierarchical in the framework of Samgang(Three fundamental principles). The issue of 'man and women' was about the control of female sexuality by institutionalizing 'chastity' and 'moral training' in the name of purgation of public morals. The knowledge of women in the confucianism of the early Joseon whose characteristic was the institutionalization of gender is presented in the codes such as Joseon gyeonggukjeon(Administrative Code of Joseon), Gyeongje yukjeon(Six Codes of Administration), Gyeonggukdaejeon(Complete Code of Law) and Joseon wangjo sillok(Annals of the Dynasty of Joseon).
