The Recognition of Primary School Teachers to Korean History under Japanese Imperialism

Abstract

This is to deal with Korean history to which primary school teachers under Japanese Imperialism gave recognition. They learned Korean history in various courses, especially, the teacher’s license examination was most important as it means qualification, employment and promotion. Intending teachers filed questions from the former examinations and repetitively read relevant textbooks. In particular, the most important textbook for them was “Japanese History Summary”. In those days, there were scarcely any books authorized by the Japanese viceroy except that book. In the text book, Korean history was limited to Japan-related one. Namely, the textbook gave salience to the heroic age, the period of the Three States, the Opening of Ports, and Japan-Korea annexation (Japanese Invasion). Also, the textbook said as follows: “Korea never became independent, and from the first its south and north has been governed by Japan and China respectively. Also, it has been subjugated by China since the Goryeo Dynasty. Every time a new dynasty rose, the populace’s hurt got worse. On the other hand, Japan has been governed by the privileged Emperor. Korean people had not overcome external aggression and the populace’s hurt until it had been a tributary of Japan.” The textbook defined the significance of Japan-Korea annexation, and intending teachers had to master it.
