Abstract
This essay aims to closely examine Ch’oe Chae-sŏ’s scholarly and practical trajectory in order to explain how he came to reach his “Theory of National Literature” in the “New Order Period”. The essay argues that during his studies of British Romanticist thought in the English Literature Department of Kyŏngsŏng Imperial University, Ch’oe sought to find a potential for redemption by positioning the contemporary situation of Chosŏn as that of “Japan’s Ireland”. Also, the essay points out that, although the Fall of Paris and the start of war conscription led to his change in direction from culturalism to nationalism and from then on, he claimed himself as a theorist of “national literature”, in actuality, there was no real literary thought with which he could identify. In addition, the essay traces back Ch’oe’s path of hidden struggles and contradictions, where he continually clashed with the side of Japan regarding the undeniable a priority of “Koreanness”. Of course, such series of events cannot be easily separated out from accusations of pro-Japanese activities. On the other hand, however, the essay asserts that it is now time to retrace the remains of the disintegration scattered away by the force of the phrase “pro-Japanese”.
