Abstract
This article aims to illuminate philosopher king Seongjong’s persuasive leadership through the debates of advance and retreat in his reign. Seongjong’s era can be distinguished by the Sarim(士林)’s entrance on the political stage, who criticized the Hungu(勳舊) and pursued new kinds of politics of reclamation or enlightenment. Former studies have explained that this new politics was made by the outer factor, namely Sarim’s emergence in politics. But this paper tries to focus on the inner factor, namely Seongjong’ efforts and ‘philosophical’ persuasion to make his subjects consider their corrupted mind and take care of their souls. Through- out this analysis, we can see Seongjong’ persuasive leadership as philosopher king and the politics of soul-care as the essence of confucian reclamation.
