이 글은 주체사관의 적용된 1970~1980년 북한의 주요 역사서에 수록된 병자호란 관련 역사서술을 검토함으로써 해당 시기 북한 역사인식의 한 단면을 살펴보려는 목적에서 작성되었다. 1950년대부터 1960년대 중반까지 대외항쟁사를 중심으로 이루어진 북한의 대외관계 역사서술은 방향성 면에서 남한의 그것과 유사했다. 하지만 1970~1980년대 주체사관이 역사서술에 본격적으로 구현되면서 북한의 대외관계 분야의 역사서술은 ‘반침략투쟁사’로 고착화되었고 침략‒투쟁의 이분법적 선악구도가 형성되면서 사실상 퇴보했다. 이 같은 경향은 조선시대의 대외항쟁사 서술에서도 나타나는데 특히 ‘병자호란’ 부분에서 두드러졌다. 이 무렵 출간된 북한의 역사서에서는 병자호란 당시 인민의 반외세적 투쟁이 이전보다 더욱 강조되면서 서술이 단조로워졌고, 현재 북한 지역의 의병 활동이 부각되었다. 뿐만 아니라 인민의 투쟁을 중앙 정부의 사대주의와 구분하여 유의미한 성과로 평가하면서 패전이라는 역사적 사실을 도외시하였다. 이러한 역사서술은 대외관계사에 대한 해석의 여지를 좁힘으로써 건설적 논의의 진전을 이루기 어려운 환경을 조성하였다.

Abstract
This study aims to examine the historical narratives of the Second Manchu Invasion of Korea based on historical viewpoint of self‒reliance in the history books published during the 1970~1980’s in North Korea. From 1950s to mid‒1960s, the North Korean government/scholarship narrated the foreign relations of the Joseon dynasty based on the history of resistance against foreign power, where it showed a similar tendency to the South Korean historiography at the time. However, after adopting the Juche, or the Self‒Reliance, ideology as the historical view, the narrative in history of foreign relations illuminated the ‘history of struggle against the foreign invasion’, creating the dichotomous structure, where good people resisted against the evil invaders. The same situation is found in the historical narratives of foreign relations on the Joseon dynasty, and this trend became particularly apparent in the studies on First and Second Manchu invasions alike. In North Korean history publications in 1970~80s, the resistance of the people against the Manchu invaders was emphasized and the activities of the righteous armies raised by commoners in the region of current North Korean territory was magnified. Further more the resistance of the people was dissociated from the diplomatic policy of the feudal government and semanticized as a positive accomplishment, distorting the historical fact that they were defeated by the Manchu invaders. This narrative of history narrowed the width of interpretations on the history of foreign relations, thus creating an environment difficult for providing constructive discussions.
