Weight gain is defined as the increase in body weight, increasing the prevalence of obesity, and results in metabolic diseases. Weight gain was reportedly caused by the interaction between the obesogenic environmental factors and individual metabolic factors. Sociodemographic and environmental factors (demographic factors, lifestyle/behavioral factors, food/nutritional factors, socioeconomic factors), drug-related secondary causes (some of the corticosteroids, antihyperglycemics, antihypertensives, antidepressants, etc.), and metabolic factors (aging and hormonal changes, menopause and decreased sex hormones, decreased adipocyte degradation, decreased fibroblast growth factor 21, central sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, decreased sympathetic-adrenomedullary system activity) are significant factors related to weight gain. It is crucial to prevent weight gain and maintain an ideal weight, but studies on the risk factors of weight gain are insufficient. Therefore, this study evaluated the factors associated with weight gain to find strategies for preventing unnecessary weight gain.
Despite the emergence of obesity as a significant public health concern, artificial sweeteners have made their way into various food products due to the perception, that they serve as substitutes for sugar. Artificial sweeteners are used to supposedly achieveweight management and health improvement. However, their efficacy and safety remain debatable. Commonly used artificial sweeteners include aspartame, acesulfame potassium, saccharin, and sucralose. This article discusses the effects of artificialsweetener consumption on weight loss, appetite regulation, blood glucose control, andgut microbiota. Research findings, concerning the consumption of artificial sweetenersand their association with body weight, have shown inconsistencies between randomized controlled trials and cohort studies. Studies, comparing artificial sweeteners to sugar, have reported no significant differences in satiety. Although artificial sweetenershave no calories, they can affect blood sugar levels through the cephalic phase insulinresponse. A recent study suggested that artificial sweeteners influenced the occurrence of diabetes. Due to limitations in the study design, excluding diabetes-influencing factors was not feasible. The evidence showed that artificial sweeteners harbored potential health risks, necessitating further investigation. According to recent studies, the consumption of artificial sweeteners was associated with gut microbiota changes andindividual blood sugar responses. It is important to note that artificial sweeteners cannotbe considered safe alternatives to sugar, and further research is required.
Estrogen is crucial in regulating food intake, energy expenditure, glucose metabolism, and lipid metabolism. During menopause, the decline in estrogen levels predisposes women to weight gain, abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) prevents weight gain, improves lipid metabolism by lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol while raising high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and delays the onset of type 2 diabetes in menopausal women. The effect of MHT on CVD in menopausal women remains controversial. The Women's Health Initiative study was terminated prematurely after it revealed that hormone administration increased the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and thromboembolism. However, some studies have found that MHT had no effect or decreased the risk of CVD. The inconsistent results were likely due to multiple factors, including the timing of hormone therapy initiation, duration of therapy, type and dosage, and presence or absence of CVD risk factors at the start of treatment. Despite its benefits in terms of managing weight gain and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and CVD associated with obesity, it is not recommended as the primary therapy for weight loss or diabetes prevention.MHT is primarily indicated for postmenopausal women, who are likely to benefit from its potential to prevent weight gain and improve lipid metabolism.
Obesity is a complex multifactorial disease that is associated with various complications, including cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of obesity among young adult males has increased, and this has increased the prevalence of several comorbidities.This trend was closely linked to lifestyle factors, including heavy drinking, smoking cigarettes, and an imbalanced diet. This emphasized the necessity of lifestyle improvements for effective obesity management. In this case, the comprehensivelifestyle changes and adjuvant medication resulted in weight loss and improvement inseveral comorbid conditions in a young adult male. The case highlighted the importance of a comprehensive approach to managing obesity. Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle in addressing obesity and its complications.
Obesity is closely related to chronic diseases and cancer. The present case report aims to discuss the anti-obesity treatment strategy and the evaluation of the clinical progress in a patient with obesity and concurrent fatty liver disease. Following five months of treatment with liraglutide and rosuvastatin, the patient had a weight reduction of 3 kg (4.7%), a decrease in fasting blood sugar by 42 mg/dl (26.6%), a decrease in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 82 mg/dl (60.2%), and decrease in alanine transaminase. This case report documented the treatment of a patient with common chronic diseases encountered in the outpatient setting. Based on the therapeutic effects documented in clinical and laboratory indices, the anti-obesity treatment plan significantly aided in managing chronic diseases.
