A Case of Internal Myiasis of the Repiratory System Associated with Pneumonia

Abstract

Internal myiasis is a rare disease. Particularly, myiasis of respiratory system has not been reported in Korea, yet. This case report is described that patient with pneumonia was associated with internal myiasis. She was 84-year old female patient admitted in emergency department, Konyang University Hospital due to dyspnea and fever and drowsy mental status. About twenty fly maggots continuously crawled out from the nose at third hospital day in the intensive care unit of hospital. These maggots were about 7.2mm long on the average and identified as genus lucilia belonging to family Calliphoridae. And we found the eggs of dipterous larvae from bronchial washing study. The lesion of this myiasis case might be regarded in the respiratory system of patient. This is the first report of an internal myiasis case of respiratory system in Korea. These cases are discussed with a review of the literature.
