Abstract

This paper aims to explore the institutional difference between Tsinghua University Science Park (TusPark) in Beijing, and business incubator of Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen (RITS), and to examine how the difference leads to different new product performance for tenants. In doing so, we use survey methodology to investigate the innovation sources, university linkages, and innovation outputs of tenants in TusPark and RITS. We found that tenants in RITS reply more on “market-driven” knowledge sources for innovation: including knowledge from customers, suppliers, and competitors. The empirical findings suggest that the technology support provided by RITS and the high dependency on “market-driven” knowledge sources jointly contribute to the better new product performance for tenants in RITS.

Abstract

Practical methodology for categorizing collaborative disciplines or research in a quantitative manner is presented by developing a Correlation Matrix of Major Disciplines (CMMD) using bibliometric data collected between 2009 and 2014. First, 21 major disciplines in science and engineering are defined based on journal publication frequency. Second, major disciplines using a comparing discipline correlation matrix is created and correlation score using CMMD is calculated based on an analyzer function that is given to the matrix elements. Third, a correlation between the major disciplines and 14 research fields using CMMD is calculated for validation. Collaborative researches are classified into three groups by partially accepting the definition of pluri-discipline from peer review manual, European Science Foundation, inner-discipline, inter-discipline and cross-discipline. Applying simple categorization criteria identifies three groups of collaborative research and also those results can be visualized. Overall, the proposed methodology supports the categorization for each research field.

Abstract

Many countries set growth engine technologies and industries for economic growth and job creation. Each country always wants to know their technological or industrial position in the world in these industries. This study aims at identifying the worldwide position of 19 growth engine industries defined in Korean government. The methods are quantitative by counting the number of startup companies in the world. The ORBIS database was used to extract the number. Therefore, this article may be the first research for the world appearance of growth engine industries and its comparison between world and G7, and between G7 countries. Also, this may be the first study using the ORBIS database on the analysis of certain technology industries. Further, we showed a method to identify world features of technology industries.

Abstract

Patent information as a proxy measure of technological capability has been utilized to establish technological strategies of firms. It is important to monitor what competitors’ plans for direction on research and development in the initial stage of new industry. Cancer metabolism has been considered as a beacon of hope for cancer research because it is anticipated that the research field will play a central role in developing effective cancer therapies. There is little attention given to understanding the status quo of organizational configurations. By utilizing network analysis, six sub-groups of cancer metabolism were categorized and the relationship between an individual field and participants were analyzed based on cluster and entire network-level. Although the largest drug and biotech companies tried to take an initiative across the whole fields, the differences in technological capabilities between them was discovered. This paper attempts to improve the validity of the suggested procedure and is significant in that it looks at the entire structure of cancer metabolism research from a strategic perspective for the first time.

Abstract

Public R&D investment information has diverse implications for researching R&D trends. Also, as it is important for the establishment of R&D policy to grasp the current situation and trends of R&D to improve science and technology level, science and technology information service system, such as NTIS (National Science & Technology Information Service), is operated at a national level in most countries. However, since the data forms provided by current NTIS are raw data, it is necessary to develop the R&D performance indicator or to use additional scientometric methods by analyzing scientific papers or scientific R&D project information for grasping R&D trends or analyzing R&D task results. Thus, this study applied public R&D investment information to investigate and monitor R&D trends in the field of information & communication technology (ICT) of meteorology and climatology by using NTIS data of Korea and NSF (National Science Foundation) data of USA.

Abstract

This is an interview with Professor Kwang-Hyung Lee, founding Dean of KAIST Moon Soul Graduates School of Future Strategy and founder of the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering of the same university casting two questions about academics. The first question is what pattern is desirable in the evolution of research topics of an academics. While traditional researchers in science and engineering tend to focus on one subject in ever greater depth over time, Professor Lee’s research agenda has spanned several new topics by gradually changing the content of the study: from artificial intelligence to bio and brain research, and to creativity development method, further to future study. The second question is about researchers’ social responsibility. He has devoted to contributes to industry fields and the nation through academic activities as well as educating several successful business people, founding a new academic department and graduate school of future studies.
