Research Trends in Complementary Medical Therapy for Common Cold

Abstract

Objectives : To help the Oriental Medicine clinical studies for the common cold treatment, this study analyzed the tendency of researches of Complementary Medicine on the common cold published in Pubmed lately. Methods : This study analyzed 26 research papers of Complementary Medicine on the common cold published in Pubmed for lately 10 years. It analyzed on the number of papers published annually and in each country, the number of subjects, the period of research, the area of trial, the method of study, the objective of study, intervention, respectively and on intervention, the objective of study, the result of trial wholly. Results : There were the research papers concerning treatment, preventing, safety of herb medicine, inducer, improvement of symptoms of the common cold in the study objective. There were the most research papers concerning treatment of the common cold among them. There were more positive results compared to negative results for treatment and preventing. The results for safety and symptom improvement were positive, and the result for the inducer was indeterminate. There were the research papers of using the food and medicine, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, cold exposure in the intervention. There were the most research papers of using the food and medicine among them. The food and medicine interventions were Echinacea preparations, vitamin, zinc preparations, Baptisia, Thuja, the root of North American ginseng, probiotic bacteria, troxerutin, garlic, Andrographis paniculata, Caffeine. The using of Echinacea preparations was the most frequent among them. Conclusions : Lately, positive research results of Complementary Medicine on the common cold were more than negative.
