A Clinical Study for Recurrence Rate of Chronic Paranasal Sinusitis in Adults

Abstract

Objective : To know the recurrence rate of paranasal sinusitis in adults using follow-up investigation Method : Data was collected from 37 patients who were treated in Dept. of Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology & Dermatology, Kangnam Oriental Medical Hospital from 2001-10-01 to 2005-05-31 for chronic paranasal sinusitis over 21 years old adults. Results & conclusion: 1. The males were 51.4% and female were 48.6%. And recurrence rate was 78.4%. 2. By residence, 78.4% lived in apartment; 21.6% lived in houses. 3. In main symptoms, nasal obstruction was the highest. 4. The duration of disease was within 1 month to 40 years; the group within 5 years was the most portion. 5. The patients who had chronic nasal family history were 40.5%; The patients who didn't have chronic nasal family history were 59.5%. 6. In period Tx distribution, the group treated within 4 weeks was the most portion as 54.1%. 7. In method of Tx distribution, the patients treated with herb medicine and acupuncture were more(62.2%) than herb medicine only(37.8%). 8. The most common past history with nasal symptoms were chronic rhinitis. 9. The frequent parts of paranasal sinusitis on PNS images were lateral maxillary sinus, unilateral maxillary sinus and ethmoidal sinus in good order. 10. The patients who drunk little were more(75.7%) than drinking patients(24.3%); The patients who didn't smoke were more(78.4%) than smoking patients(16.2%). 11. The patients who slept for 6-7 hours were the most(40.5%). 12. The patients who preferred warm water were the most with 54.1%; cold water was 21.6%. 13. The patients who had a common cold 3-5 times in one year was the most with 54.1%.
