Abstract

It is very important to study the system of the modern print media for understanding the advent of avant-garde poetry and its cultural significance. Avant-garde poetry is a genre which extremely tries to test the possibility of the printed media technology. Only the one who knows the possibility of the printed media technology can try to write an avant-garde poem. But without the growth of a printing technique, one cannot be successful in publishing that poem. The combination of Korean avant-garde poet's experimentalism and the growth of a printing technique in Korea made it possible for the advent of Korean avant-garde poetry in the mid-1920s. The poetics of the modern printed media, — something in common found in avant-garde poetry and a printing technology — had three elements: the reification of voice, a message as a form, and an abstracted plane. The reification of voice means the disappearance of voice in the visual printing media. And a message as a form means that a poetic form in itself becomes a kind of message by the aggressive use of signs and figures in avant-garde poetry. An abstracted plane means an abstracted thinking pattern by the loss of multi-dimensional voice.
