Abstract

In the early 19th century, which was the time when the greatest change occurred in history, Chosun had the characteristic of the initial stage in the intercultural communication as it just began to make a cultural contact with the Western world. The intercultural communication between Chosun and the Western world began without any information or recognition for each other and with high uncertainty. Therefore, the whole process of formation of intercultural communication can be seen by examining this period. Therefore, this study examined the literatures of the Western people who visited Chosun and thereby aimed to identify the intercultural communication of Chosun in the 19th century. As a result, at the beginning of the communication between distinct cultures, the non-language communication such as conversation by writing and body language turned out very effective whereas the similar pronunciation and the cultural difference turned out to be an obstacle in the intercultural communication. Also, the intercultural communication of Chosun was subjective and vertical and it tended to become a high-context communication that emphasizes situation and intuition. This study which examined the orbit of intercultural communication is expected to provide a basic data for understanding the intercultural communication of Chosun in the 19th century.
