A Study on Tak Muhan as a Mask Dancer and a Maker of Korean Mask Drama in the 18th and 19th Century

Abstract

This paper looks into the life history and activities of Tak Munhan who was a mask dancer and a maker of Mask Drama (山臺) in late 18th and early 19th century. There are few researches about the life and activities of popular artisan, who belonged to the lowest class. By researching Chujegii (秋齋紀異) by Jo Susam, Takmunhansilgi (卓文漢紀實) by Sim Neungsuk, various uigwe (records of court banquets) and governmental materials, I reconstructed a life history of Tak Munhan. He was from the middle class with military career and he was a military man with swordsmanship who belonged to military camp. Tak Munhan was approved as the best dancer in the artistic performance field from the youth. He was actively engaged in mask dancing and participated in national performance event as a dobyeonsu (leader) of mask drama association called sandaedogam (山臺都監). He took the lead of making many tools including the stage setting required in the national events or ceremony like rite of exorcism called nare (儺禮). Particularly, he assumed the rite of exorcism held in 1784 to receive envoys from the China (Ching dynasty) and took responsibility of various corruptions involvement with this ceremony, which made him be reprimanded by King Jeongjo and be exiled for six years. Due to this case, the rite of exorcism in national level was not held any more. He was remembered as a person in charge in the last rite of exorcism. Since then, he took an active part in making bangsangsi (one of masks in rite of exorcism) and juksanma (horse) required in King’s funeral.
