The present study explored the possibility of applying counterfactual thinking to the practice of coaching. Counterfactual thinking refers to the mental simulation of alternatives to past experiences (e.g., “If only I had participated in coaching, then I would have been successful in my job search”) that facilitates behavioral change and goal attainment. Specifically, counterfactual thinking is related to various aspects of coaching, such as clarifying goals and the current state, identifying strategies for goal attainment, and forming behavioral intentions. Furthermore, counterfactual thinking contributes to understanding past experiences and fostering a sense of meaning in life. Thus, the present study discussed ways to integrate counterfactual thinking into each stage of the GROW coaching model and the transtheoretical model.
