Abstract

Running title: Adequacy of dentist supply Objectives: The proper provision of dentists is very important for delivering the dental care that people need. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adequacy of dentist supply and to predict the proper supply of dentists in Korea for the next 10 years. Methods and materials: Using the data from 2004 to 2017 in the Statictics Korea, the dental needs were measured as days of admission and the annual total dental care hours in 2020, 2023, 2026 and 2030 were predticted using regression analysis. The dental care productivity (average in-office hours) of dentists was analyzed using regression analysis including age, gender, education level and region as a confounder. The annual care hours were predicted according to seven scenarios based on the percentage of women among dentists, post-dentist education levels, the percentage of dentists in the metropolitan area, aging and retirement age. Results: The needed dentist based on the data in the Statictics Korea will be 27, 288 ~ 27, 311 in 2020, 28,104 ~ 28,1785 in 2023, 28,977 ~ 29,124 in 2026, and 30,174 ~ 30,413 in 2030. On the other hand, the number of dentists in Korea will be 26,945 in 2020, 28,813 in 2023, 30,682 in 2026 and 33,173 in 2030. The adequacy index of dentist supply will be –0.01 in 2020 to +0.10 in 2030. Conclusions: Our data showed that dentists will be adequately supplied in Korea for the next 10 years. Overall, the ratio between dentist versus 1,000 Koreans will be increased from 0.5 in 2019 to 0.7 in 2020, which will meet the mean of OECD countries.

Abstract

In the anterior maxillary area, dental implants for tooth replacement are challenging due to the need to satisfy high esthetic level as well as functionality. Immediate implant placement and provisionalization can dramatically reduce the edentulous period, and then fulfill patient’s demand for esthetics. The aim of present case report is to demonstrate two cases that successfully restored single tooth with immediate implant placement and provisionalization in the anterior maxillary area. A 47 years old female was scheduled to replace her maxillary right central incisor due to crown-root fracture by trauma. Another 54-year-old female was planned to place dental implant following tooth extraction of maxillary right lateral incisor owing to continuous pus discharge despite repetitive treatments including apicoectomy. In these two cases, surgical and prosthetic procedures progressed in a similar way. After minimal flap elevation, atraumatic tooth extraction was performed. Implant was placed in proper 3-dimensional position and angulation with primary stability. Bone graft or guided bone regeneration for peri-implant bone defect was conducted simultaneously. Provisionalization without occlusal loading was carried out at the same day. Each definitive crown was delivered at 7 and 5 months after the surgery. Two cases have been followed uneventfully for 2 to 5 years of loading time. In conclusion, Immediate implant placement and provisionalization could lead to esthetic outcome for single tooth replacement with dental implant under proper case selection.

Abstract

The form and location of chin is very important factor which determine the facial impression. Genioplasty is getting popular in order to improve the facial impression as facial beauty is considered as improvable factor. Through the geniplasty, chin can be moved to wanted location 3 dimensionally Genioplasty is relative simple but precise diagnosis and accurate surgical technique is very important for accurate and satisfying results. The form and shape of chin itself can be analysized and also must be evalulated in relation to the nose and lip and face. Author introduces the analysis of the chin, various surgical techniques of genioplasty and presents some cases

Abstract

Background: Reduction malarplasty is one of the most popular facial contouring surgeries in east Asia for making patients’ faces smaller. Currently in Korea, reduction malarplasty surgeries are performed mostly at plastic surgery clinics, but few cases are done at oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics. The reason might be because of post-operative complications after reduction malarplasty, such as undercorrection, overcorrection, asymmetry, cheek drooping, malunion, pain and noise. Those complications should be uneasy to be handled by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, however, they can be prevented by knowing the effective and safe reduction malarplasty techniques. Therefore, in this article the author as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, would like to suggest safe and effective surgical methods for reduction malarplasty customized for Korean patients. Method: L- shape osteotomy of zygomatic body was performed with intraoral approach via vestibular incision, and the zygomatic arch was osteotomized with extraoral approach via sideburn incision. Then zygomatic complex was separated and rotated mesio-superiorly without removal of a bony strip and fixed with miniplates and microplates without making a bony gap. Conclusion: Surgical results were favorable and satisfied by the patients without cheek drooping, malunion, undercorrection and asymmetry.

Abstract

Aesthetic facial profile is mainly determined by cultural background. In some countries, prominent mandibular angle is considered as characteristics, whereas it is considered as unattractive in East Asian countries. Therefore, reduction surgery for prominent mandibular angle is one of the popular cosmetic surgery in theses countries. The anatomical component of the mandibular angle consists of masseter muscle and the angular part of the mandibular ramus. Thus, the mandibular angle reduction can be performed by myotomy or bone reduction or both.
