Abstract

Surveys of easily accessible or moderately remote South Korean mountains has revealed several common exotic and early species-complexes [Amynthas corticis (Kinberg, 1867) with A. diffringens (Baird, 1869), A. gracilis (Kinberg, 1867) and Metaphire californica (Kinberg, 1867)], plus an unexpected number of new native taxa. Megascolecid Metaphire muuido sp. nov. and lumbricid Eisenia muuido sp. nov. are newly described from Muuido Island, Incheon. Montane taxa are parthenogenetic Amynthas tokioensis oculo subsp. nov. that lacks male pores but is yet comparable to both Amynthas tokioensis (Beddard, 1892) and Metaphire soulensis (Kobayashi, 1938) with its possible new synonym A. chiakensis Hong & James, 2013. Apparently unique sympatric taxa are Amynthas bangtaesan bangtaesan and A. b. confinius sup-spp. nov., Amynthas centurio sp. nov., Amynthas punicans sp. nov., Amynthas seoraksan and A. seoraksan iti subspp. nov. These are newly described and their DNA COI gene barcodes, where obtainable, are presented in a phylogram with outgroup Acanthodrilidae Microscolex dubius (Fletcher, 1887) from Lake Biwa Japan being a new exotic record for Asia.

Abstract

Korean species of the genus Myelochroa are revised taxonomically and the following eight species are recognized: M. aurulenta (Tuck.) Elix & Hale, M. entotheiochroa (Hue) Elix & Hale, M. galbina (Ach.) Elix & Hale, M. hayachinensis (Kurok.) Elix & Hale, M. irrugans (Nyl.) Elix & Hale, M. leucotyliza (Nyl.) Elix & Hale, M. metarevoluta (Asahina) Elix & Hale and M. perisidians (Nyl.) Elix & Hale. Myelochroa ibukiensis K.H. Moon et al. is reduced to a synonym for M. aurulenta. Myelochroa denegans (Nyl.) Elix & Hale, M. indica (Hale) Elix & Hale and M. xantholepis (Mont. & Bosch) Elix & Hale are excluded from the lichen of Korea. In addition, a key for the species of the Korean Myelochroa is provided.

Abstract

A total of 34 species belonging to 11 families and 21 genera in the Order Mestostigmata are reported from the Korean Peninsula, of which 20/34 species are new for the fauna of the Korean Peninsula (Lasioseius furcisetus Athias-Henriot, 1959, Cheiroseius nepalensis Evans & Hyatt, 1960, Cheiroseius curtipes (Halbert, 1923), Hypoaspis imitatus Reitblat, 1963, Hypoaspis presternalis Willmann, 1949, Hypoaspis kargi Costa,1968, Pseudoparasitus placentulus (Berlese, 1887), Gamasiphis novipulchellus Ma & Yin, 1998, Parholaspulus bregetovaae Alexandrov, 1965, Parholaspulus paradichaetes Petrova, 1967, Neparholaspis arcuatus Petrova, 1977, Neparholaspus simplex Evans, 1956, Parholaspulus excentricus Petrova, 1967, Gamasholapis asiaticus Petrova, 1967, Veigaia carpillaris Tseng, 1994, Veigaia anmashanensis Tseng,1994, Leptogamasus bicorniger Witalinski, 1977, Neogamasus insignis (Holzman, 1969), Iphidinychus kakumeiensis Hiramatsu & Hirschmann, 1992, Trigonuropoda sanguinea Hirschmann & Hiramatsu, 1977). A total of 19 of the previously unreported species were collected in soil samples from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), while 13 species were collected from soil samples from the Republic of Korea (ROK). Only two species were found in both the DPRK and the ROK. Illustrations and short descriptions for previously unreported species provided.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the density dependence of the horns tissue on the species and the age of the representatives of the deer family. In scientific literature this problem was covered partially. Basic physical parameters (mass, volume, and density) of horns from red deer (Cervus elaphus), fallow deer (Dama dama), European (Capreolus capreolus) and Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) were estimated. The present study was designed to analyze the results for making identification of species and age of the animal possible.

Abstract

Zeuzera is one of the most important wood borer pests in South East Asia. Like of most other genera of moths, the systematic of this genus is still in dispute, especially on the monophyly and the relationship within this genus due to the fact that genus is very varied. This genus was defined based on external characters only such as cross vein Sc-Rs present, humeral plate approximately triangular in shape and anal plate moderately long to moderately short. Therefore, the monophyly of this genus need to be evaluated based on more comprehensive data. To clarify the monophyly of the genus Zeuzera, to reveal the phylogenetic relationships among the Indonesian species, and to establish the genetic characters of Indonesian Zeuzera, we analyzed seven species of Indonesian Zeuzera including three other species distributed around the world based on nucleotide sequence variation across a 580-bp region in the CO I gene. The results showed that the monophyly of Zeuzera was supported by bootstrap tests at the MP and ML tree building methods (¤95%). Genus Zeuzera was divided into two groups (A and B) with Z. borneana was excluded from the two groups and occupied at the basal node. Indonesian species was distributed into two different clades. CO I gene alone was able to fully resolve the relationships among species within clade B. However, further investigations were needed by including more species and other genes that the more conserved to test the validity of the phylogenetic hypothesis proposed here.

Paraplectana sakaguchii Uyemura, 1938 is a ultra rare species belonging to Araneidae worldwide. This species was collected by sweep net between the shrubs at the foot of mountainous region in August, 2012. This species is briefly described and illustrated in this report.
