Abstract

In order to investigate the indigenous prokaryotic species diversity of the Nakdong River system in Korea, fresh water samples from Hapcheonho Lake and Jinyangho Lake were analyzed for bacterial taxonomic diversity. The isolated bacterial strains were identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, and those exhibiting at least 98.7% sequence similarity with known bacterial species, but never reported in Korea, were selected as unrecorded species. Eleven unrecorded bacterial species were discovered in this study. The isolates were identified as Aquabacterium citratiphilum, Clostridium ghonii, Curvibacter delicates, Deinococcus depolymerans, Eubacterium moniliforme, Flavobacterium nitrogenifigens, Kineosporia mesophila, Luteibacter jiangsuensis, Microbacterium terricola, Rhizobium larrymoorei, and Sediminicoccus rosea belonging to the phyla Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Deinococcus-Thermus. The selected isolates were further characterized for cellular and colonial morphologies, growth conditions, physiological properties, and enzymatic activities. Descriptive information of these previously unrecorded species is also provided.

Abstract

As part of a larger study with the aim to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, nine bacterial strains were isolated and assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria in 2016. High 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.5%) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clades with known species indicated that each strain belongs to an independent and predefined bacterial species. This is the first report of these nine species in Korea: two strains of the Methylobacterium, two strains of the Microvirga, one strain of the Pantoea, and four strains of the Psychrobacter, all within the Proteobacteria. Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, and isolation sources are also described in the species description section.

Abstract

The present study summarizes the taxonomic description and Korean distribution of 16 taxa that are recorded for the first time in Korea. These taxa classified into Chlorophyceae (Astrephomene gubernaculifera, Botryococcus protuberans, Chlorangiella polychlora, Cylindrocapsa geminella, Kirchneriella contorta var. gracillima, Korshikoviella gracilipes, Oocystis naegelii, O. ovalis, Stylosphaeridium stipitatum), Charophyceae (Cosmarium moniliforme, Cosmocladium constrictum, C. perissum), Xanthophyceae (Tetraedriella tumidulum, T. spnigera), Chrysophyceae (Cyclonexis erinus) and Cyanophyceae (Arthrospira platensis). Among these taxa, six genera including Astrephomene, Chlorangiella, Cosmocladium, Cyclonexis, Stylosphaeridium, and Tetraedriella are newly recorded in Korea.

Abstract

The first occurrence of the genus Hornera (Bryozoa, Cyclostomata) is reported from waters around Jeju Island, Korean Peninsula. Hornera jeongsangi n. sp. differs from all known species of the genus Hornera in having very prominent spiny protrusions around the autozooidal apertures, which are not arranged in fascicles, the gonozooidal ooeciopore facing frontally and nonporous zooidal walls around the ooeciopore.

Abstract

During a scientific survey of Korean isopod fauna, we discovered two marine isopods, Limnoria segnoides Menzies, 1957 and Munna japonica Shimomura and Mawatari, 2001, which are new records to South Korea. Limnoria segnoides and M. japonica were collected by SCUBA diving from the subtidal zone of Jeju Island and Yangyang-gun in South Korea, respectively. In this paper, we provide diagnosis and illustrations of the two isopods. Additionally, we provide GenBank accession numbers of partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) of two species.

Abstract

After the first record of a Korean ciliate in 1931, more than 130 papers have been published describing Korean ciliates. Of these records, the years 1997, 2012, and 2016 include milestone publications in Korea. Even though the publications provide summarized data about Korean ciliates with relevant literature citations, these publications included two nomenclatural errors, two misspellings, and one misidentification; nine species were transferred to other genera. Furthermore, the type specimens deposited in the laboratory of Prof. Joong Ki Choi (Inha University, Korea) were transferred to the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK) because of his retirement. Here, we provide an updated list of 331 Korean species described by 2016 and present information about the type specimens. We also and address the aforementioned problems with bringing together scattered data related to ciliate lists.

Abstract

Korean species of Atypophthalmus Brunetti, 1911 and Thrypticomyia Skuse, 1890 crane flies (Diptera: Limoniidae) were taxonomically revised. New findings of Achyrolimonia Alexander, 1965, Helius Lepeletier and Serville, 1828 (Latreille et al., 1828) and Limonia Meigen, 1803 were discussed. Genera Atypophthalmus and Thrypticomyia, species Helius (Helius) flavus (Walker, 1856) were newly recorded for the Korean Peninsula, and Achyrolimonia neonebulosa (Alexander, 1924) and Limonia juvenca Alexander, 1935 were new records for North Korea. Male terminalia of L. episema Alexander, 1924 were described with detailed photographs. Identification keys, re-descriptions and illustrations of both sexes from all species in Korea were presented.

Abstract

A survey of insect fauna on Dokdo Island was conducted by Yeungnam University from 2009 to 2016. The survey locations were the two islands of Dokdo Island (i.e., East and West Islands), located in the East Sea of South Korea. As a result of the survey, we identified five orders, 20 families and 27 species including 10 species newly recorded on Dokdo Island, of which Eupelmus australiensis (Girault) is recorded for the first time in South Korea. In combination with the results of previous surveys made from 1981 to 2016, the insect fauna of Dokdo Island is now known to consist of 10 orders, 77 families and 164 species (and 29 additional undetermined species). In this paper, we list the insect fauna on Dokdo Island and present photographs of 10 species with brief taxonomic notes of a eupelmid species.

Abstract

Two fungivorous Korean erotylid beetles - Triplax ainonia Lewis, 1887 and Triplax nagaoi Nakane, 1977 in the tribe Tritomini - were recorded for the first time from Korea. All Korean Triplax members are associated with the fruiting bodies of higher fungi and fungus-grown bark. Re-description, key to the species of Korean Triplax, photographs of adults, and line drawings of diagnostic characters and host fungi records are provided.
