Abstract

determine the effect of age, gender, smoking, and systemic disease on the implant cumulative survival rates. Materials and Methods : The retrospective study was performed on 51 implants placed in 26 patients by one dentist at the Dental Implant Center, Seoul National University Dental Hospital in the years 2000-2010. The cumulative survival rates were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method. The differences within the factors were analyzed using log-rank test and the correlations between the factors and implant survival rates were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard model. Results : 1. Among the total of 51 implants placed in 26 patients, 7 implants failed and 44 implants remained stable. The 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year cumulative survival rates were 92%, 88%, and 85%, respectively. 2. Patients in their 50s and in their 70s showed statistically significant difference in the cumulative survival rates (P < 0.05). Gender and the existence of systemic disease did not show significant results. 3. In the implant treatment, smokers showed 7.5 times higher risk of implant failure than non-smokers (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Implants installed in combination with sinus elevation can be considered as a reliable treatment method.

Abstract

prior to clinical study. Material and methods: The extracted mesiodens and the 3rd molar teeth were prepared. The teeth are prepared as in the process of the autogenous tooth bone graft. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed for inorganic analysis. Results: Rough and porous surfaces were observed in all materials in SEM analysis. Ca/P ratio of mesiodens was 1.55 and the 3rd molar was 1.22 in EDS analysis. XRD analysis shows that the 3 main peaks position were similar. This means that the graft materials are very similar to that of the crystallinity. Conclusions: The mesiodens and the 3rd molar teeth are very similar to the inorganic component. These results provide the reasonable rationale that mesiodens can be used as autogenous tooth bone graft in a clinic.

Abstract

satisfaction survey of female dentists in Gwangju was performed and the factors affecting job satisfaction were examined. A survey of female dentists in Gwangju was conducted using a custom-designed and validated questionnaire which incorporated the Korean Dentist satisfaction Survey (KDSS) as well as questions regarding socio-demographics and professional characteristics. Satisfaction for each question was measured by a 5-point Likert scale. The final analysis was performed with 89 questionnaires, after excluding 3 non-response questionnaires. Analysis of the data for each group was carried out using a Mann- Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis H test. The reliability of the questionnaire was identified by the internal consistency of the survey using Cronbach coefficient. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS (IBM SPSS Statistics 19, SPSS Inc, Chicago, Ill, USA). The level of statistical significance was set at p = 0.05. On analyzing with use of the above mentioned method, the following findings were observed: Income, leisure time, time for self-development, and overall job satisfaction were lower than the average, especially the percentage of dissatisfaction was much higher than that of satisfaction. Satisfaction was associated with age, duration of employment, and the number of assistants. The limitations of this study are the lack of an adequate sample size, convenience sampling during extraction, the lack of questionnaire items, the limitations of quantitative research, and failure to perform measurement in the non-response group. However, female dentists can be expected to achieve a more satisfactory and enhanced working environment if the research based on the current study is followed up in an expanded target group.

Abstract

of 48 hours with quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology. Materials and Methods: Bovine incisor surfaces were demineralized for 10 days. Two types of stimulated saliva were collected from 7 healthy persons. 24 hours after tooth brushing (Stimulated saliva group) and immediately after tooth brushing with 1,000 ppm NaF dentifrice (Dentifrice saliva group). The specimens were immersed in saliva and fluorescence images were obtained by QLF-digital (QLF-D biluminatorTM‚) at 2, 4, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours fluorescence loss ( F%) of the lesions. A paired t-test was performed to assess fluorescence differences between before ( Fbaseline) and after ( Ftreatment time) the remineralization process. Results: Before the remineralization, the mean Fbaseline of the initial demineralized specimens was -18.42 0.15 (%). In both groups, the F values obtained at baseline and after 2 hours were statistically significant (P < 0.001), indicating recovery of the lesions by approximately 40% after 2 hours. After 48 hours, remineralization rates were slightly higher (49%) for the stimulated saliva group than for the dentifrice saliva group (41%), but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions: With QLF minute degrees of remineralization by saliva can be measured in periods as short as 2 hours. Additionally no significantly higher effects of remineralization were observed in the dentifrice saliva group when compared to the stimulated saliva group.

Abstract

Periodontitis is the major concern of oral disease to human, and begins in the interdental area. The aim of this study is to discuss the clinical application method and the meaning of interdental brush. It is very difficult to change oral health behaviors, because patients believe that it is enough that the reason of tooth brushing is to remove food debris, not dental biofilm. Moreover, there are several barriers for using interdental brush. For the better oral health and maintenance of dental prosthesis, it is very important to motivate the use of the interdental brush well, and teach the desirable design of the interdental brush and the clinical meaning to patients.

Abstract

Since early model of powered toothbrush (Broxadent) was introduced in the 1960s, the design of powered toothbrush has changed significantly. Today powered toothbrushes can be categorized as mechanical and sonic. The main patterns of movements in the modern powered toothbrushes are oscillation, reciprocation, and rotational. Powered brushes especially helpful for people who have disabilities or dexterity issue. These brushes are also highly recommended for patients who require a larger handle because these are easier to grasp. By systematic review of Cochrane group in 2014, powered toothbrushes reduced dental plaque and gingivitis more than manual toothbrushing in the short and long term. Now we can recommend powered toothbrushes to people who need to enhance self-control dental plaque removal efficacy.

Abstract

Introduction : Inadequate oral health control is a major risk of oral diseases. Regular home-based care is essential to maintain good oral hygiene. In particular, mouthrinses can support conventional tooth brushing in reducing accumulation of oral plaque. Effect : Antimicrobial mouthrinses are used as part of daily oral care to reduce plaque and gingivitis. Mouthrinses contains fluoride could help remineralization of enamel and dentin. The most common molecules contained in mouthrinses are chlorhexidine, essential oils, cetyl pyridinium chloride, triclosan, hyaluronic acid. Currently, chlorhexidine is the most efficacious compound, with both antiplaque and antibacterial activities. Similar results are reported for essential oils and cetyl pyridinium chloride, although with a somewhat reduced efficacy. Considering the adverse effects of chlorhexidine and its time-related characteristics, this molecule may best be indicated for acute/short term use, while essential oils and cetyl pyridinium chloride may be appropriate for long-term, maintenance treatment. Conclusion and suggestion : Antimicrobial mouthrinses are safe and effective, and when used in conjunction with brushing and flossing, they are an important method of reducing plaque and gingivitis. To improve compliance, dental health care professionals should adapt oral health care recommendations to fit patients’ specific needs.
