Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of sport spectator motivation on spectator satisfaction and revisit intention among university students. Research design, data, and methodology: A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed to university students who attended collegiate sports events using a convenience sampling method. After excluding 23 incomplete or inappropriate responses, 377 valid questionnaires were analyzed. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 29.0, employing frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The findings reveal that player interest, socializing, team interest, time consumption, vicarious achievement, entertainment, and escape significantly influenced spectator satisfaction, whereas sports aesthetics did not. Additionally, team interest, entertainment, sports aesthetics, and escape had a significant impact on revisit intention, while player interest, socializing, time consumption, and vicarious achievement did not. Conclusions: These results contribute to a deeper understanding of spectator motivation and its role in enhancing satisfaction and retention in collegiate sports settings. Further implications were discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine current problems of survival swimming curriculum and suggest insights and basic data for improving curriculum. Research design, data, and methodology: This study collected literature of survival swimming curriculum and related reports. Furthermore, in-depth interview with fifteen survival swimming instructors was conducted to induce insights regarding current status and improvement of curriculum. Results: First, poor institutions among the institutions currently registered in the national private qualification registration number appeared. Accordingly, when granting a private qualification registration number, it should be possible to grant a qualification registration number according to the exact name, education content, and whether or not to issue a qualification, and a close review of the private qualification registration number institution should be conducted. Second, it is necessary to provide education only to those who hold life-saving personnel qualifications based on basic literacy as an instructor (child abuse prevention education, etc.) within the curriculum. Third, securing a swimming pool is the most urgent, and it is necessary to expand the number of hours, secure diversity in life jacket sizes, and plan a walking swimming process within the curriculum to strengthen the ability to respond to the site. Conclusions: Given the findings, this study suggests that prerequisite conditions of certificates of saving a life should be established to apply survival swimming certificate. Plus, sound sport facilities including swimming pool are necessary for a quality of swimming education. Further implications were discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to analyze the dissemination process and public perception of pickleball by using social big data. Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport with simple rules and low economic barriers, and social media has played a crucial role in raising its awareness. Research design, data, and methodology: Applying text mining and sentiment analysis, key terms such as ‘tennis’, ‘badminton’, ‘tournament’, and ‘Seoul’ were frequently mentioned while the lack of pickleball specific courts and noise were identified as major obstacles to its expansion. Results: Sentiment analyses indicated that more than 80% of public perceptions toward pickleball were positive. While pickleball has economic advantages due to its ability to utilize existing sport infrastructure, a lack of professional instructors and structured training programs was highlighted as a challenge. Conclusions: Based on these findings, it was suggested that policy support including infrastructure expansion, professional instructor training, and the establishment of systematic education programs is essential for the sustainable growth of pickleball. Furthermore, promoting community-based club activities and organizing tournaments are expected to be an effective strategy for expanding its popular foundation. Additionally, the utilization of social big data analysis is proposed as a valuable tool to develop sport policies and marketing strategies. This study academically justifies pickleball’s role as a medium for promoting health and social interaction, contributing to the potential growth of the sport industry.
Purpose: This study explores how resilience to failure influences mental health and career sustainability among elite athletes in South Korea. While previous research has examined failure and self-efficacy, limited attention has been given to the role of structural and cultural factors in shaping athletes’ failure perception and recovery. Research design, data, and methodology: Using a qualitative case study approach, this study employs thematic analysis to examine semi-structured interviews with ten elite athletes from individual and team sports. Results: The findings reveal three key insights. First, failure is perceived not only as a performance setback but also as a threat to identity, increasing anxiety and psychological distress. Second, resilience serves as a protective factor for athletes’ mental health, shaped by both psychological and social resources; highly resilient athletes reframe failure as a learning opportunity, while those with low resilience experience self-doubt and emotional strain. Third, social support and autonomy-supportive coaching enhance resilience and well-being, whereas hierarchical and performance-driven environments reinforce fear of failure. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the need for systematic psychological support, coaching strategies, and organizational policies that foster resilience and normalize failure as part of athletic growth, ultimately promoting athlete well-being and career longevity.
Purpose: The purpose of study is to examine the structural relationships among athlete satisfaction, team commitment, team performance, and transfer intention in a collegiate sports context. Research design, data, and methodology: A convenience sampling method yielded 245 completed questionnaires from college athletes, of which 10 were excluded for incompleteness, resulting in a final sample of 235 valid responses. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 29.0 and AMOS 29.0, incorporating correlation, reliability, confirmatory factor, and structural equation modeling analyses. Results: Results show that athlete satisfaction positively influenced team commitment and team performance, while negatively affecting transfer intention. Furthermore, team commitment positively influenced team performance, although neither team commitment nor team performance showed a significant impact on transfer intention. Conclusions: These findings offer empirical evidence of the critical role athlete satisfaction plays in shaping both psychological and behavioral outcomes, as well as enhancing organizational efficiency and effectiveness in the collegiate sports setting.
