Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand fans’ perception of the MLS. Particularly, this study investigates both the avid fan’s perception of the MLS as well as the same perception in a potentially larger audience. This study aims at (1) segmenting the findings into three groups, (2) understanding the characteristics of these groups from the sport marketing prospective and (3) comparing the three groups to see whether there are any similarities and differences. Research design, data, and methodology: Using motivational factors alongside the 4P’s of marketing, these three segments were analyzed and their similarities and differences were compared. An online survey was created and distributed through different MLS databases. Results: Prior to the distribution, a few hypotheses were made regarding the motivational factors of fans; specifically, that the quality of play has led to a lack of interest in the league and that the presence of star athletes has the potential to bring in more fans for the league. The quality of play and star athletes are important and thus a bigger emphasis needs to be placed on the designated player rule. At the same time, more television coverage as well as more exhibition games with international teams can generate more buzz for the league and garner more fans. Conclusions: This study explored motivational factors which support fanship of Major League Soccer. Further implications were discussed.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of a 6-week weight training and complex training program on the Ybalance test (YBT) in high school soccer players. Research design, data, and methodology: This study included 26 high school soccer players from City S. Subjects were divided into a weight training group (WTG: n=13) and a complex training group (CTG: n=13) based on their willingness to participate without medical problems. The YBT measured anterior (AT), posteromedial (PM), posterolateral (PL), and composite scores (CS), and was measured twice: before the start and after the end of training. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 statistical program to compare pre- and post-training using paired-t tests, between training groups using independent-t tests, and left-right comparisons using independent-t tests. Results: Training resulted in a significant pre- to post-training change in PL in the left foot WTG group (p<.05), with no significant change in the other measures. There were no significant differences between training groups and between left and right sides. Conclusion: To improve YBT in high school soccer players, a program to improve ankle and hip mobility and strength should be added along with improving large muscle strength through weights and comflex training

Abstract

Purpose: This study sought to explore theoretical knowledge of benefits that sport participants perceived. In specific, this study reviewed related literature to explore similarities and differences of perceived benefits between competitive sport and eco-sport. Research design, data, and methodology: This study employed an integrated literature review approach. A conceptual model is suggested by reviewing prior studies. The study collected relevant documents via online search engine including KCI and google scholar. The contents and results of collected data were analyzed and categorized into perceived benefits between competitive sport and eco-sport. Results: For results, summary of perceived benefits was presented. In specific, a total of twelve variables were derived from the literature analysis as physical benefits of sport participation, which include cardiorespiratory fitness and physical self-concept and so forth. Second, a total of six mental benefits were discovered by prior studies, including happiness, stress release, psychological health and so on. Third, in terms of socio-relational benefits, four variables were derived from previous literature, which are social support, trust, and social capital and so on. Conclusions: This study identified positive outcomes of physical activities. Furthermore, a variety of benefits were categorized into three major aspects such as physical, mental, and social benefits. The study needs to be conducted to explore the effects of perceived benefits on repeat participation. Further implications were discussed.
