Abstract
타자에 의해 기획되고 서술된 텍스트는 과거 ‘우리의 것’을 타자의 관점으로 관찰하고 분류한 후 범주화했다. 이 과정에서 판단중지(epochee)와 감정이입(empathy), 즉 현상학적 패러다임이 활용되었으며, 개입된 이데올로기(ideology)는 오리엔탈리즘(orientalism)이다. 외교, 선교, 사업, 탐험 등 상이한 방문목적에 따라 한국을 찾아온 타자의 경험이 텍스트를 형성한 후 한국에 관한 지식(knowledge)이 서서히 축적(蓄積)되었다. 그러나 조선을 관찰했던 외부의 관찰자들은 물론 당시 조선인들에 비해 근대화에 대한 경험의 밀도(density)는 상대적으로 높았지만, 이들 또한 조선을 보편문화담론이나 구조적으로 분석하는 수준에까지는 이르지 못했다. 외부관찰자들은 주로 자신들이 보고 싶은 것을 보고자 했고, 관심이 있는 것에만 집중했다. 결국 한국에 대한 타자의 이미지는 시종일관 비 일관적이고 파편적(fragmentary)이었다. 때로는 전근대적 비문명 사회로 조선을 인식하는가 하면, 신기함으로 표상되는 조선이 있고, 그들이 미처 생각지 못한 경이로움으로 재현되는 조선도 있었다. 결국 조선에 대한 이방인들(일본과 중국을 포함한)의 해석은 다층적이고 동시에 자의적이다. 그리고 물리적으로 그곳에 이미 ‘사람들’이 살고 있었음에도 불구하고, 타자들에게 조선은 자신의 욕망 내지 이상을 실현해야 할 ‘빈 공간’이었을 수 있다. 타자의 선택에 따라 수없이 많은 ‘조선(한국)’의 이미지가 만들어졌고, 도리어 오늘의 우리는 타자의 ‘시선’을 통해 미처 인식하지 못했던 우리의 과거를 발견하고 있다. 결국 타자가 한국에 이식(移植)하길 희망했던 근대성(modernity), 달리 말해 ‘타자적 욕망’은 그들의 언어로 재현되었다. 그리고 현재 우리가 당연시하는 우리의 정체성과 으레 ‘우리의 것’으로 여기는 것들이 대체 어떤 과정을 거쳐 근대담론으로 자리 잡게 되었는지, 오늘 우리는 타자의 시선을 통해 그 낯선 ‘우리 자신’의 과거를 들여다보고 있다.
