The aesthetic characteristics appeared in Sim Unkwang’s poetry of Frontier‒Focusing on his poem, 「Seojunggo」 and 「Bukjunggo」

Abstract

Sim Unkwang is a representative poet in the middle of the Choseon Dynasty, We should fix our sight upon his poetry of Frontier. Because he writes prolifically and was excellent in representation techniques. In this manuscript, I took a look at some of the characteristics of Sim Unkwang’s poetry of Frontier focusing on his poem, 「Seojunggo」 and 「Bukjunggo」. Sim Unkwang acted as not only a bridge between the Koryo Dynasty and the second half of the Chosun Dyansty, but also the direct cause of descendant’s creating poetry of Frontier, which was affected by setting items of poetry of Frontier in his collection of literary works. His experience in ‘Border Fortress(traditional Chinese: 邊塞)’ of Pyongan province and Hamkyong province brought special inspiration different from the days of official in Seoul. Sim Unkwang always missed his family in Pyongan province and Hamkyong province. His writing style in poetry of frontier formed one flow of the history of sino‒korean poetry. Thus literary significance of his poetry of frontier cannot be too highly estimated.
