Development and Validation of the Christian Coaching Competency Scale

Abstract

This study developed a scale to measure the competencies of coaches who provide Christian coaching and verified its validity. Christian coaching is defined as ‘a professional process in which the coach, the coachee, and the Holy Spirit work together to achieve the goal of fulfilling God’s will based on a biblical worldview and toward the gospel.’ Through literature review, expert interviews, and open-ended questionnaires, we developed 15 factors and 105 preliminary items regarding the concept of Christian coaching competency, and through a preliminary survey, 160 coaches who are currently practicing Christian coaching or who want to practice Christian coaching in the future were selected. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, 12 factors and 73 items were derived, and then the main survey was conducted. As a result of exploratory factor analysis on data from a total of 300 people, 11 factors and 47 items were derived. As a result of conducting a second higher order factor analysis on the 11 derived factors, the two higher order factors were spirituality (biblical worldview, spirituality, evangelism, spiritual goal achievement, Holy Spirit) and expertise (respect, self-awareness, professional knowledge, listening empathy, expansion of consciousness, goal achievement) were derived. To verify convergent validity, the correlation with the self-coaching competency scale was analyzed, and to verify criterion validity, the correlation between the coach’s self-efficacy, intrinsic religious orientation, and coaching satisfaction was analyzed. All statistically significant correlations were found, confirming convergent validity. and criterion validity were verified. Finally, a discussion of this study, its academic significance and practical implications, limitations of the study, and future research directions were presented.
