This study analyzes 21,686 dental clinic business names from 1946 to February 2016, where official records exist. The results of this study will be used as a historical data of Korean dental clinic and contribute to the decision of dental clinic name. According to the results of analysis, the first official dental clinic used in Korea was ‘Chu’ in 1946, ‘Minsaeng’ and ‘Chusaeng’ in 1958, and “Won” in 1959. In the 1960s, dentists’ family names were often used as dental clinics. In the 1970s, dental clinic names were often used as dentists' family name, ‘Jung-ang’ and ‘Seongsin’. In the 1980s, dental clinic name was used more than other names such as ‘Seoul’, ‘Yonsei’, ‘Hyundai’ and ‘Sang-a’ along with the dentist's family name. In the 1990s, a dental clinic name was used to refer to the words ‘Yeonsei’, ‘Seoul’, ‘Hyundai’, ‘Sang-a’, ‘Isalang’, ‘Uli’, ‘Jeil’, ‘Bubu’ used a lot. In the 2000s, Dental Clinic's name began to use english words such as °ÆGood Morning','White','Prime 'and adjectives such as ‘Haengboghan’, ‘Ipyeonhan’. The characteristic of the dental clinic name in 2010 is the increase of the business name ‘UD’. From 1946 to February 2016, the most commonly used dental clinic name was ‘Seoul’, ‘Uri’, ‘Isarang’, ‘Yonsei’, ‘Hyundai’, ‘Good Morning’ ‘Jung-ang’, ‘UD’, ‘I’, ‘Miso’
Objectives: Aim of this study was to evaluate bone regenerative efficacy of a chemically cross-linked porcine collagen membrane (CM) when used in combination with highly soluble biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP). Materials and methods: Physiochemical properties of the experimental collagen membrane were analyzed. Four circumferential defects with diameter of 8 mm were created in each calvarium of New Zealand white rabbits (n = 10). Defects were randomly allocated to one of following 4 groups: 1) BCP-CM (BCP (20% hydroxyapatite/80% -tricalcium phosphate) covered with the prepared collagen membrane), 2) BCP (only BCP used), 3) CM (only the prepared collagen membrane used), and 4) C (control; only blood clot). After 2 weeks (n = 5) and 8 weeks (n = 5), histologic and histomorphometric analyses were performed. Results: The experimental collagen membrane exhibited dense and compact structure, relatively high tensile strength and lower degradability. Histologic analyses revealed that new bone increased rapidly at 2 weeks, while defect was preserved at 8 weeks. Histomorphometric analyses revealed that the new bone areas increased in the BCP-grafted groups over 8 weeks, with BCP-CM exhibiting greater total augmented area than that of BCP group both at 2 weeks (27.12 3.99 versus 21.97 2.27 ) and 8 weeks (25.75 1.82 versus 22.48 1.10 ) (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The experimental collagen membrane successfully preserved localized defect for 8 weeks despite early rapid resorption of BCP. Within the study limitations, combined use of the chemically cross-linked porcine collagen membrane and highly soluble BCP aided localized bone regeneration.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) for detecting sealant microleakage. Materials and Methods: A total of 31 extracted sound human molar, assigned as suitable for sealant application, were chosen and divided into two groups: (1) no microleakage group and (2) microleakage group by applying sealant using the different methods. All specimens were immersed in 1% methylene blue for 24 h and sectioned to confirm the absence or presence of sealant microleakage as a gold standard method. Subsequently, all the sectioned specimens were digitally photographed using a microscope with a magnification of 50. Presence of microleakage was evaluated on a 2-point rating scale. The association of histological method with conventional methods (visual and tactile assessment) and SS-OCT was assessed using a chi-squared test. The intra- and inter-examiner reliability was calculated using Cohen’s Kappa. Results: The SS-OCT showed a sensitivity of 0.73 and a specificity of 1.00, while visual and tactile assessment showed a sensitivity of 0.67 and a specificity of 0.86. The inter-examiner reliability of SS-OCT was 0.79, whereas that of the visual and tactile assessment was 0.53. Conclusions: SS-OCT can be used to non-invasively detect sealant microleakage and to monitor pit and fissure sealant in the clinics.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ratio of 4 root canals and the incidence of Radix Entomolaris in mandibular first molars and find out anatomical difference according to number of roots by analysis of cone-beam CT images in a Korean population. Materials and Methods: Total 142 images containing mandibular first molars were selected from CBCT images taken from 2013 to 2017 at Gangneung-Wonju National University Dental Hospital. After reconstructing the image with reference to the Cemento-enamel junction, the root canals were detected at the bottom of the pulpal floor and the number of roots and root canals were analyzed. Various lengths and MLO-DLO-DBO angle were measured between each canal orifices and the external contour line of the tooth, and the distolingual canal wall thickness was measured. Student t-test was used for statistical significance. Results: Among the total 142 teeth, 4 canals were 42.2% and Radix Entomolaris was 25.3%. As the results of measuring various lengths and the angle, the distolingual canal orifice in Group 2(with Radix Entomolaris) tends to deviate to the lingual side than the mesiolingual canal orifice and to the mesial side than the distobuccal canal orifice. Besides, thickness of the distolingual canal wall in Group 2(with Radix Entomolaris) was significantly thinner than that of Group 1 at every level except pulpal floor level. Conclusion: It is necessary to consider the difference according to the presence of Radix Entomolaris in endodontic treatment.
Multiple myeloma is a lymphohematopoietic disorder leading to abnormal hemostasis and significant pathologic changes of skeletal system. It induces multiple circular or oval-shaped radiolucent lesions which are characterized by ‘punched-out appearance’. The surrounding trabecular bone normally shows no significant sclerotic reaction. Multiple myeloma patients may visit dental clinics, without perception of the disease themselves, due to discomfort from edema of orofacial region, oral ulcers, tooth mobility, pain or gingival bleeding. Multiple myeloma is susceptible to various complications, including delayed hemostasis and infection, which could occur during routine dental treatment such as periodontal and surgical operation. For radiographic diagnosis of multiple myeloma, common radiologic features of this tumor could be visualized by panoramic radiographs in the dental clinics, and further medical examinations and treatment can be recommended as a result.
