Abstract

Background : Research on oral health and dental service utilization of foreign residents and multicultural families in Korea will play an important role as a fundamental data for establishing future oral health policies in the multicultural society. Objective : In this scoping review, previous studies on oral health and dental service utilization of foreign residents and multicultural families in Korea were reviewed, and the studies were classified according to research participants and research purposes. The variables related to oral health and dental service utilization and socio-demographic factors were also analyzed. Through this systematic review of literature, the limitations of existing research and future research directions were suggested. Design : Korean databases such as Korean Medical Database (KMbase), DBpia, Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), Korean studies Information Service System (KISS), and National Assembly Library were investigated to collect data regarding oral health and dental service utilization. After retrieving the references, the title and the abstract of the literature were reviewed and their relevance was screened. Full text screening was conducted and a total number of 42 studies were selected, which met the inclusion criteria. Results : After careful review and analysis of 42 studies, the following results were obtained: (a) the research participants were married migrant women, multicultural children and adolescents, foreign workers, and foreign students (four types), of whom the most frequent was marriage migrant women (45.5%) and (b) the research purposes were oral health behavior, oral health status, dental service utilization, oral health belief, oral health knowledge, and oral health education (six types), of which the most frequent was oral health behavior (39.7%). Conclusion : This research takes a systematic approach to exploring research participants, purposes, variables related to oral health and dental service utilization, and demographic variables of foreigners and multicultural families residing in Korea. According to the findings, the most published research topic of research participants was 'marriage migrant women' and oral health behavior has the highest number of publications in research purposes.

Evaluation and Diagnosis of Sleep Bruxism

Abstract

Bruxism is the masticatory muscle activities involving grinding or clenching the teeth, which is divided into sleep and awake bruxism. Methods for evaluating sleep bruxism include clinical methods to investigate symptoms and signs and the use of supplementary tests such as intra-oral devices, electromyography, and polysomnography. Portable electromyography monitoring the masseter muscle activity is useful for clinical application. Polysomnography is the most accurate method for diagnosing sleep bruxism.

Abstract

Objectives: Cracked Tooth Syndrome(CTS) refers to an incomplete fracture of a vital posterior tooth that involves the dentin and sometimes extends into the pulp. The composite resin restoration with cuspal coverage is less invasive treatment option and have many advantages for the management of CTS. This case report describes the treatment of cracked tooth with composite resin by cuspal coverage and 1-year follow up of maxillary second molar. The composite resin restoration with cuspal coverage was place over cracked tooth. During the direct restorative process, the use of clear occlusal index made filling very easy and fast. Also, it could be used immediately for the management of CTS. In conclusion, in cracked tooth without pulpitis, cusps covering with composite resin restoration can be used in the early stage, and may delay root canal treatment and restoration of crown.

Abstract

The velopharyngeal mechanism is a muscular valve extending from the posterior bony palate to the posterior pharynx, which congenitally disrupted in cleft palate deformity. Velopharyngeal insufficiency(VPI), defined as the inability to completely close the velopharyngeal sphincter that separates the oropharynx and the nasopharynx. Despite primary palatoplasty, VPI can be remained and cause the problems of so called “cleft palate speech”. To treat the cleft palate speech, surgery plays an definitive role in combined with the speech therapy. In this paper, the author introduces various surgical methods of pharyngoplasty and their clinical significances with appropriate cases.

Long-term Stability of Maxillary Protraction Orthopedic Treatment Using Facemask in Cleft Lip and Palate Patients

Abstract

Cleft lip and palate is one of the most frequent craniofacial deformities impacting the patients' life from birth. Multidisciplinary treatments given by the team approach is necessary to resolve many problems. One of the treatments challenging to the team is orthopedic treatment for protracting maxilla during the period of growth. Conventional way of maxillary protraction is using facemask with intraoral appliaces such as bonded expander, labiolingual arch, and so on. Despite the efforts of the clinicians, it has been well known to have not so good prognosis for the orthopedic treatment. Recently, with the help of skeletal anchorage, better effectiveness and efficiency in maxillary protraction using facemask has been reported. Therefore, it is worth seeking its clinical applicability and prognosis through clincial cases and literature reviews especially for cleft lip and palate patients.

Dentistry and Speech Therapy : From Multidisciplinary to Interdisciplinary Collaboration
초록보기
Abstract

Recently, the importance of a team approach in dentistry and speech lanauge pathology has been emphasized. The two fields of dentistry and Speech-Language pathology differ in curriculum, training, and practice, but have something in common with the stomatognathic system, which governs the function of mastication, swallowing, and speech production. Therefore, identifying clinical areas where dentistry and speech therapy can collaborate and establishing a cooperative framework will enable patients to receive integrated, consistent evaluation and treatment and provide effective and best results. This study mentioned roles and importance in the area of experts in both fields and discussed team approaches that can interact with them.
