Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the differences in the morphology of the lips according to anteroposte rior dentoskeletal patterns and facial divergence. Materials and Methods: The samples were composed of the frontal facial photographs of 117 adult patients who satisfied all the cephalometric measurements for six groups (Class I or II or III and normodivergent or hyperdivergent). The morphol ogy of the lips was evaluated on the frontal facial photographs and the measurements were compared between the groups. Results: In the normodivergent groups, the height-to-width ratio of the lip vermilion was significantly greater in the Class II group than in the Class I group, and the labrale superius angle and upper lip convexity of the Class II group was smaller than that of the Class I group. In the hyperdivergent groups, the stomion inferius angle of the Class III group was smaller than that of the Class II group. Lower facial height and the interlabial gap in the hyperdivergent groups tended to be larger than those in the normodivergent groups. The height-to-width ratio of the lip vermilion and the commissure height were larger in the hyperdivergent groups than in the normodivergent groups. However, the upper lip height and philtrum height did not differ between the hyperdivergent and normodivergent groups. Conclusion: The morphological characteristics of the lip vermilions on the frontal view differed according to the sagittal dentoskeletal relationship and facial divergence.
Treatment of odontogenic cyst in pediatric patients should be considered to preserve adjacent anatomical structures, espe cially developing permanent teeth. Decompression can prevent damage to surrounding permanent teeth and induce sponta neous eruption of permanent teeth. Removable space maintainer with rubber tube for decompression is used to maintain the patency of the cyst and space for the eruption. These are four case reports of odontogenic cyst involving maxillary canine and mandibular premolars. Due to preserving permanent teeth, all cases were treated with decompression. This case report shows that mandibular premolar spontaneously erupted into the proper position. While maxillary canine may need additional treatment intervention, such as orthodontic traction or surgical extraction.
‘A picture is worth a thousand words.' In this short adage, the goal and desire achieved through this article focusing on the history of dentistry through paintings is contained. Past experience, whether direct or indirect, is an invaluable asset for dentists. In essence, the past teaches us vicariously, has historical lessons, and is a compass for the future. One of the attractions of art is that it helps people empathize. This is especially true of the power of painting. Even without words or explanations, paintings connect people from the past to modern times. Moreover, if you listen to an explanation of the historical significance of a particular painting, you discover a deeper understand ing and connection to the events depicted. In this study, famous dental paintings in art museums from around the world will be introduced. In addition, the dental paintings will be considered and discussed as evidence of the life and times of famous painters of the past, and as related to dentistry in particular. We conclude the tour as experts of dental history paintings.
Purpose: To seek a new approach to dental justice, this paper identifies public opinions on dental-related so cial and ethical issues and reviews countermeasures based on them. Methods: Naver news comments, with search term “dental overtreatment” from 2011 (when articles appear as meaningful numbers) to 2022 (present), collected and analyzed by frequency analysis, word network analysis, topic modeling, and BERT-based sentiment analysis. Results: A total of 483 articles and 26, 601 comments (excluding 9,737 comments that do not include text) were collected and analyzed. Comments were biased toward specific articles and events. Word networks and topic modeling presented complaints about medical reality, criticism for the medical community, and medical expenses. Negative emotions related to the issue were increasing. Discussion: Big data analysis of news comments is a tool that allows researchers to check the flow of public opinion related to issues beyond the examination of individual comments, which is often meaningless. The issue of “dental overtreatment” has not been represented much in the media, but the number of related articles and comments is gradually increasing. As confirmed by the categories of the comments, the response to the issue is not focused solely on medical expenses, however, there is a demand for “proper treatment.” Therefore, based on the recent theoretical discussion on the theory of justice, this study presents a different perspective for ap-proaching the issue in dentistry.
Pre-modern dentistry in Korea developed as part of traditional medicine during the Gojoseon, Three King doms Period, Goryeo, and Joseon Dynasty, and modern dentistry developed with the introduction of dentistry through the West and the introduction of dentistry through Japan. Modern dentistry has developed through the establishment and activities of the Dental Association.
