Abstract

Effects of Hwangryunhaedoktang on DS-induced colitis Objectives: We examined the effect of Hwangryunhaedoktang (HH) on the experimental ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Methods: Experimental colitis was induced in rats by daily treatment wi th 5% DS in the drinking water for 5 days. Afterw ard, the rats were divided int o two groups: the control group was administered water and the sample group was administe red HH for 7 days. Results: The sample group provided HH for 7 days demonstrated fast reco very of body weight compared with the control group. Histologic change showe d fast regeneration of crypt and surface epithelial cells and decreased edema of the s ubmucosa and decreased lymphatic follicle of mucosa compared with the control group. I mmunohistochemical stain using COX-2 gene was decreased and there was localized Ki -67 positive reaction. Regeneration of surface epithelial cel and goblet cel in muco sa was observed by transmission electron microscope. Conclusion: These results indicate therapeutic effect of HH on DSS-induced colitis in rats.
