Abstract

This study evaluates the seismic performance of road tunnels designed before the provisions for seismic design of tunnels were first established in 1999. Extensive design data and site investigation reports are investigated to select tunnels sections that are considered to be most susceptible to seismically induced damage under earthquake loading. Detailed analyses are performed on selected tunnels. The methods used are method of displacement and dynamic analysis. In performing the method of displacement, which is a type of pseudo-static analysis method used for underground structures, full domain and reduced domain modeling were used. The dynamic analyses are performed using finite difference method and using nonlinear constitutive model. Comparisons show that the reduced domain method of displacement match very closely with the dynamic analysis, demonstrating that it is the most suitable method for evaluating the seismic performance of road tunnels built in rocks. It is also shown that road tunnels, for which seismic design were not applied, are safe under the seismic risks corresponding to an earthquake with a return period 1000 years. It is concluded that additional seismic retrofit of tunnels is not necessary.

Abstract

When collapse occurs due to explosion near a tunnel, fragmentation zone should be quickly comprehended to recover the function of the tunnel. In this study, explosion behavior is to be understood and a method is described for a fast prediction of the fragmentation zone. To this end, the various 3D-meshes were made by using SolidWorks and explosion analyses were performed by using AUTODYN. The influence of explosion variables such as explosion location on fragmentation volume was examined by performing sensitivity analyses and analyzing their results. Also, a training database was established for an artificial neural network analysis, the optimal training model was selected, and the predicted results for fragmentation volume and radius were verified. As a result, it was confirmed that the demonstrated mothed in this study could be effectively used for the fast prediction of fragmentation zone.

Abstract

It is very important to understand the condition of the surround rock for the successful construction of underground space. Representative methods of estimating the rock mass condition are RMR method and Q-system, and they are applied on design, construction, and maintenance. However, many problems with the accuracy of the measurement method and the subjective viewpoint are questioned continuously, so many researchers have been studied for estimating rock condition from various methods. Most of them show only the local relation and a tendency between site investigation data and rock conditions. In this paper, the relationship between RMR method and electrical resistivity is deducted using the analytical equation derived theoretically from electric field analysis on jointed rock mass. And also, probabilistic relationship between RMR method and electrical resistivity is deducted for the increase of accuracy. If a suggested method is applied with the conventional method for estimating the rock condition, it will be helpful to estimate RMR values on the field.

Abstract

Recently there has been increased interest for the portal and shallow tunnel for an eco-friendly tunneling method. Semi cut & cover tunnel excavation techniques applied to concrete slab and construction and a growing number of cases, but there is no load combinations and arch concrete cross section for the applicable standards. Therefore, in this study, ground conditions and tunnel overburden thickness, thickness of backfill, overburden surface slope angle changes to a variety of conditions in order to propose standards for the semi cut & cover method was performed numerical analysis. Regression analysis method to the analysis of the results of numerical analysis, and linear regression equations derived to classify and organize a rational, economical, and safe semi cut & cover tunneling method based proposed.

Abstract

Urban underground structures at low ground elevations (i.e. shallow substructures) unlike typical tunnel structures are subjected to low overburden and high water pressures. This often causes the underground structures to become damaged. Various conventional methods for the urban underpass structures such as dead weight increasement, round anchors, and tension piles, are significantly conservative and provok concerns about the costly, time-consuming installation process. Recently, permanent drainage system becomes to widely use for supplementing the conventional method’s shortcomings, but, it is applied without the considerations for ground conditions and water table. In this study, therefore, numerical analyses are performed with various parameters such as groundwater level, wall height, and ground conditions in order to establish design guidelines for induced drainage system which is a kind of the permanent drainage method constructed at the Y-area. According to the numerical results, the induced drainage system is very effective in reducing the uplift pressure that acts on the base of underpass structures.

Abstract

Recently, road tunnels have become longer and the plans for long and deep road tunnel have been underway in urban areas. These long and deep tunnel excavations include NATM and TBM. Shield TBM is applied to around 80% of traffic tunnels in Europe, and approximately 30% of them in other developed countries. However, as much of equipment is imported from foreign countries at high prices and distribution rate of TBM tunnel is considerably low in Korea, NATM excavation method is commonly used. To increase TBM tunnel, it is necessary to do assure economic feasibility with the supply-demand of TBM equipment. For this, the selection of standardized TBM diameter is urgently needed. Therefore, the study aims to estimate the standardized optimum section properties of TBM by examining TBM excavation cross section utilization depending on the volume of traffic, the number of lane and its cross-section type(single or double deck), and ventilation system.

Abstract

In the mix proportion of shotcrete, it was analyzed as required in terms of eco-friendly technology to take advantage of the screenings. Screenings of recycling can be a solution in order to overcome the quality degradation due to the recent lack of good quality sand as well as the utilization of waste materials. Five regional screening and screening replaced fine aggregates for physical characteristics were analyzed to evaluate the usability screenings as shotcrete's combined aggregate. It was analyzed the effect of particle size distribution in the combined aggregate for shotcrete and maximum replacement was estimated according to the type of screenings.

Abstract

When the ground is excavated near the pre-existing structures due to the region restricted condition such as urban area, the ground will be released by the excavation and the temporary wall will be deformed depending on the earth pressure. In this case, issues can be created in terms of stability of pre-existing structures. Firstly, the laboratory model tests were carried out to investigate the ground surface settlement due to the ground excavation according to the excavation methods in this study. Using the ground surface settlement results from model tests, numerical analyses were carried out to study the structure deformation due to the ground excavation according to the excavation methods. Finally, using the structure deformation results from numerical analysis, the damage assessment of structures was carried out by using the strain damage estimation criterion.
