Abstract

This paper presents the effect of tunneling and groundwater interaction on tunnel behavior. As part of this study, design issuses for tunneling situations similar to that considered in this study are first identified. A parametric study is then conducted on tunneling situations frequently encountered in Seoul area using a 3D stress-pore presure coupled finite-element model with emphasis on the effects of ground and lining permeabilities. The results indicate that tunneling in water bearing ground results in a deeper and wider settlement trough, increased axial thrusts in shotcrete lining than those without the groundwater. Also revealed is that the axial thrusts in shotcrete lining are governed by the relative permeability between the ground and the lining. Design implications of the findings from this study are discussed.

Abstract

In this study, the 1/20 reduced-scale experiments using Froude scaling were conducted to investigate the ventilation velocity of the variation of burning rate in tunnel fires. The heptane square pool fire with heat release rate ranging from 3.71~15.6 kW were used. The burning rate of fuel was obtained by measuring mass using load cell and temperature distributions were measured by K-type theomocouples in order to investigate smoke movement. The ventilation velocity in the tested tunnel was controlled by inverter of the wind tunnel. In heptane pool fire case, the increase in ventilation velocity incresed the burning rate due to the direct supply of oxygen to the fire plume. For the same dimensionless velocity(), burning rate increased as the size of pool fire decreased.

Abstract

The two dimensional behaviors of the existing upper tunnel and the ground at crossed area due to the excavation of a lower tunnel were studied experimentally. The model tests were conducted by changing the relative location of the existing upper tunnel and the lower tunnel. The results of the study show that a vertical earth pressure outside the loosened area was increased due to longitudinal arching effect same as a single tunnel. In case vertical distance between the upper and lower tunnel is 0.7 H and 1.0 H respectively (H is a height of the lower tunnel), vertical earth pressure increased in the loosened area behind the tunnel face. But when a vertical distance is 1.3 H, ground behaviors appeared similarly to a single tunnel.

Abstract

The behavior of the ground in crossed zone due to the excavation of new lower tunnel rectangularly crossed to that was studied by model tests and numerical analysis in shallow cover. Results of the model tests show that earth pressure of the ground in crossed zone were redistributed due to the longitudinal arching effect by the excavation of lower tunnel. By the numerical analysis, minimum principal stress in crown of single tunnel has more decrease than parallel tunnel or crossed tunnel. Vertical stress at rectangularly crossed tunnel decrease more than single tunnel by stress shadow.

Abstract

Shotcrete for support of tunnel sturctures may contact with groundwater. The hazardous components in groundwater may cause corrosion of shotcrete. Also, the hazardous components may deteriorate the engineering properties of shotcrete, such as compressive strength, bond strength, flexural strength and so forth. The more the effect of the hazardous components on the shotcrete may increase, the more the stability of tunnel structure may decrease. The specimens were artificially immersed in various chemical solutions including hazardous components after the specimens were made at the tunnel construction site. It was performed to analyze the effect of the hazardous components in ground water on the engineering properties of shotcrete. The uniaxial compressive strength test, XRD, SEM were conducted to evaluate the durability and corrosion of shotcrete.

Abstract

This paper presents two case studies for tunnelling in Bangkok: a subway tunnel site and a flood diversion tunnel site. The first case study is related to ground displacement response for dual tunnel Bangkok MRT subway. The MRT subway project of Bangkok city consists of dual tunnels about 20 km long with 18 subway stations. The tunnels are seated in the firm first stiff silty clay layer between 15-22 m in depth below ground surface. The behavior of ground deformation response based on instrumentation is presented. The back analysis based on plain strain FEM analysis is also presented and agrees with field performance. The shear strain of FEM analysis is in the range of 0.1-1% and in accordance with the results of self boring pressuremeter tests. Meanwhile, the second case study is related to the EPB tunnelling bored underneath through underground obstruction. The Premprachakorn flood diversion tunnel is the shortcut tunnel to divert the flood water in rainy season into the Choapraya river. The tunnel was bored by means of EPB shield tunnelling in very stiff silty clay layer at about 20-24 m in depth. During flood diversion tunnel bored underneath the existing Bangkok main water supply tunnel and pile foundation of the bridge, instrumentation was monitored and compared with predicted FEM analysis. The prevention risk potential by means of predicting damage assessment is also presented and discussed.

Abstract

A variety of research projects have been undertaken due to the recent catastrophic tunnel fires throughout the world. Among them, more emphasis was given to full scale and scale model fire experiments, and recently the area of fire resistance of tunnel structures attract more interests. On the contrary to the cases in most of the advanced countries where design standards as well as recommendations have already been announced, no local criteria for design can be found. This paper aims at deriving the fire characteristics appropriate for the assessment criteria of fire resistance of structures in local tunnels through studying the existing fire temperature curves including ISO 834 standard temperature curve, HC curve, RWS curve, ZTV curve and EBA curve.

Abstract

World widely, the occurrences of earthquakes have been increased recently including to nations which earthquake often happen to like Japan. Taking into account that the earthquake acceleration at design was 0.154 g at the contigency level earthuake (CLE) with its geological condition, it resulted that this method must be the most efficient condition against the earthquake vibration to two lane cut-and cover tunnel. The correlations between the result of the shaking table test and its numerical analysis showed that the test data of the bending stress due to the earthquake vibration have been underestimated about 5 percents in case of the cut slope 1 : 0.6 and about 10 percent in case of the cut slope 1 : 1.2. However, on average, the results showed a similar tendency that the higher the height of the backfill of the EPS block was, the less the bending stress was.
