초록
물고입안에서 ‘물고’는 중국과 우리나라에서 전통적으로 사망을 의미하는 어휘였다. 우리나라에서는 최소 고려시대부터 이미 죽음이라는 의미로 사용되고 있었는데, 조선시대에는 물고라는 어휘 뒤에 입안이 붙어 사망증빙 문서로서 공식적으로 발급되었다. 물고입안의 발급 절차는 ① 죽은 자의 친족이 정장 → ② 통주와 이정의 사망확인 보고 → ③ 관할 수령의 검시 → ④ 검시에 참여한 이들의 진술 → ⑤ 진술을 종합한 수령의 물고입안 발급 순이었다. 그러나 공증 절차가 제대로 준수되지 못한 채 청탁, 뇌물을 통해 발급이 이루어지는 폐단이 존재했다. 가장 빈번하게 지적되는 문제는 산 자를 죽은 것처럼 꾸며 거짓으로 물고입안을 발급해 주는 것이었다. 다만 물고입안은 군역 및 신역, 특정 직역에서 대정(代定)을 요청할 수 있는 근거가 된다는 점에서 효용성을 가졌다.

Abstract
The mulgoiban (物故立案) was traditionally a term that meant death in China and Korea. In Korea, it had been used to mean death since at least the Goryeo Dynasty. but during the Joseon Dynasty, it referred to an offi cially issued document to certify a death. The procedure for issuing a mulgoiban was as follows: ① The deceased’s relatives made an appeal → ② Reports were submitted by the Tongju and Lee Jeong confirming the death → ③ An autopsy was performed by the head of the jurisdiction → ④ Statements were taken from those who participated in the autopsy → ⑤ The statement was issued by the Suryeong. However, there were problems of this certificate being issued upon requests or through bribery without proper compliance with the notarization procedure. The most frequent problem was of living persons faking their death so that a mulgoiban would be issued. The mulgoiban had the significance of serving as the basis for requesting Daejeong in gunyeok, physical labor, and Occupational Classifi cations.
