Abstract

This paper considers whether there is Gijiljiseong in Mibal developed between Hanju (Lee Jin-sang, 1818–1886) and Myeonwoo (Kwak Jong-seok, 1846–1919). While Hanju argued by comparing Mibal/Bonyeonjiseong and Ibal/Gijiljiseong (there is no Gijiljiseong in Mibal), Myeonwoo argued for Mibal and Ibal as one Gijiljiseong (there is Gijiljiseong even in Mibal). This raises the problem of good and evil. If Hanju is then interpreted as meaning that a person is pure and evil because he has no Gijiljiseong in Mibal, and only Bonyeonjiseong, Myeonwoo, on the contrary, holds that good and evil coexist because a person has Gijiljiseong in Mibal. This is the practical consequence of their theoretical difference as to “whether or not there is a Gijiljiseong in Mibal.”
