Abstract

In this study, the surface displacement was investigated according to the various depth of cover when the tunnel excavation equipment was used in a clay soil. For this the laboratory scaled model test was carried out using the soil sample similar to the in-situ conditions. We carried out four tests according to tunnel depth(1.5D, 2.0D, 2.5D, 3.0D). The distribution of impact due to tunnelling was quantitatively analyzed in the three-dimension by measuring the surface displacement. In addition, the pattern of surface displacements was figured out.

Abstract

This paper is a study for behaviour of cavern type anchorage tunnels for suspension bridges with cable tension. Anchorage behaviour, design method for anchorage, and failure surface angle, δ are analyzed by comparing numerical analysis results and ultimate pullout capacities(Pu) using bilinear corelation equation. Results show that design depths for cavern type anchorage tunnels are easily checked with linear relationships for P/γ/H vs. displacement and Pu/γ/H vs. H/b. The analysis results of maximum shear strain distribution and plastic status show that failure shapes are closer to circular arc model than soil cone model which frequently used. To an easy calculation of the ultimate pullout capacity, we propose a simple bilinear failure model in this study. The calculated ultimate pullout capacities from the proposed bilinear corelation equation using two failure angles results are similar to the ultimate pullout capacities from numerical analysis.

Abstract

In this study TBM disc cutter prediction models including Gehring, CSM and NTNU models were investigated and the characteristics of the models were examined. The influence of penetration, uniaxial compressive strength and abrasiveness index on the models was analyzed. The life of disc cutter linearly increases with penetration per revolution and decreases with increasing uniaxial compressive strength of rocks. As the abrasiveness index, CAI, increases, the life of disc cutter in Gehring and CSM model decreases. On the contrary, the life of disc cutter life in NTNU model decreases with increasing CLI. Also, comparisons of predicted disc life were made between models using actual job site data.

Abstract

This research covers correlation analysis between the machine data measured from EPB Shield TBM construction site and the ground condition during excavation, and figures out how the machine data are affected by the change of ground conditions through single and mixed parameter analysis. It was found that when the ground is changed from hard rock to soft rock, the ratio of the cutter torque to thrust force increases. The relationship between the ratio of the cutter torque to thrust force and the penetration rate shows that the ratio has a certain range of values for hard rock; on the other hand, it increases for soft rock. It means that we can recognize a sign of appearance of weak zone by assessing the ratio of the cutter touque to thrust force according to each penetration rate. Multiple regression analysis of the machine data showed that the cutter torque increases with the increases of the total thrust force, and it decreases with the increase of the uniaxial compressive strength of the ground.

Abstract

The road tunnel install a vent for the purpose of ventilation and smoke control. Ventilation equipment capacity(number of jet fans) depends on from the condition that of the pressure and ventilation resistance. Pressure and the resistance under operating vehicle have affected on the drag coefficient. The drag coefficient of the tunnel have affected by the blockage effect and slipstream effects. However, when calculating the ventilation fan, are not properly consider taking into account such effects. Therefore, ventilation force may have been slightly overestimated. This paper describes the drag coefficient through a numerical analysis to calculate the equivalent resistance area that reflects the vehicle distance, and examined the equivalent resistance area. The ventilation coefficient corresponding to the result heavy vehicle mixing ratio of the present study was not clear. Equivalent resistance area had reduced by about 86% compared to the road design handbook current standards. Also it had analyzed and reduced to 62.2% compared to Korea Highway Corporation ventilation design criteria ratio, which is the old standard.

Abstract

The standards of ventilation system for bi-directional tunnel have not been established now. For this reason, with regard to the bi-directional tunnel below 1km, some problems have been appeared in ventilation capacity designing and in determiningwhether the mechanical ventilation system is needed or not for each case. In this study, we examine the characteristics of natural ventilations, analyze ongoing ventilation design casesfor bi-directional tunnels and classifythose cases into two groups. This study is carried out about the capability of using natural ventilating system by calculation of reasonable ventilation capacity in bi-directional tunnel and review of relationship between natural wind speed (Vr*) and required speed(Vreq). This paper aims at providing a basis data for bi-directional tunnel ventilation design standards.

Abstract

In this study, the variations of cutter acting forces depending on cutting conditions were examined to obtain basic data for roadheader cutting head design. The linear cutting tests were performed in the condition of different attack angles, penetration depths, cutter spacings by using a slim conical pick for the light cutting condition. Cutter acting forces were measured by 3-directional load cell under different test conditions, and the analysis for cutting performance were carried out after calculating average values of the measured results. It is confirmed that the optimal cutting condition for the mortar specimen is the 50 degree attack angle, the cutter spacing of 12 mm, the cutting depth of 9 mm which are obtained from the analysis results. In addition, 50 degree attack angle is more effective than 45 degree attack angle to design optimal specifications of cutting head.

Abstract

In this study, the cutter acting forces were measured by 3-directional load cell at two different skew angles and various S/d ratios during a series of linear cutting tests using a slim conical pick. The analysis for cutting performance were carried out after calculating average values of the measured results. The increase of penetration depth results in the decrease of specific energy. And the variations of the cutter acting forces depending on penetration depth in the case of 6 degree skew angle were smaller than in the case of 0 degree skew angle. From this results, 6 degree skew angle is more effective than 0 degree skew angle in designing optimal specifications of cutting head. In addition, Fc/Fn under the setting of 6 degree skew angle was smaller than under the setting of 0 degree skew angle. However, it should be considered that the increase of cutter acting force in the cutting direction accompanied the increase of driving force in the case of the setting for 6 degree skew angle.

Abstract

When tunnelling with TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), accessibility to tunnel face is very limited because tunnel face is mostly occupied by a bunch of machines. Existing techniques that can predict ground condition ahead of TBM tunnel are extremely limited. In this study, the TBM Resistivity Prediction (TRP) system has been developed for predicting anomalous zone ahead of tunnel face utilizing electrical resistivity. The applicability and prediction accuracy of the developed system has been verified by performing field tests at subway tunnel construction site in which an EPB (Earth Pressure Balanced) shield TBM was used for tunnelling work. The TRP system is able to predicts the location, thickness and electrical properties of anomalous zone by performing inverse analysis using measured resistivity of the ground. To make field tests possible, an apparatus was devised to attach electrode to tunnel face through the chamber. The electrode can be advanced from the chamber to the tunnel face to fully touch the ground in front of the tunnel face. In the 1st field test, none of the anomalous zone was predicted, because the rock around the tunnel face has the same resistivity and permittivity with the rock ahead of tunnel face. In the 2nd field test, 5 m thick anomalous zone was predicted with lower permittivity than that of the rock around the tunnel face. The test results match well with the ground condition predicted, respectively, from geophysical exploration, or directly obtained either from drilling boreholes or from daily observed muck condition.

Abstract

As many parts of Korea are mountainous, many tunnels have been constructed to be in step with rapid economic development since 1970’s. However, the interest on maintenance of tunnels is far less than the awareness of need for tunnels. As the tunnel maintenance system is the responsive maintenance system which responds to the problems found during the inspection, it will be very difficult to respond to each problem with the limited budget and manpower of the government agencies when the number of aged tunnels rapidly increase in the future. As such, this study presents the need for the LCCA (Life Cycle Cost Analysis) based tunnel asset management system to transform the tunnel maintenance to a preventive management system in a strategic and long-term viewpoint and proposes the framework for development direction. It observed the asset management implementation cases of social infrastructure in other countries and analyzed the need for asset management technique to manage the tunnels in Korea. Moreover, it applied the LCCA model, which is the economic and engineering quantitative decision making technique, for tunnel asset management to present the concrete direction for development of an asset management model and designed the R&D framework to systemize it.
