Abstract

With increase of the extension of long tunnels and urban tunnelling, demands on the new tunnelling technologies are raised. Currently, drilling and blasting tunnel construction method is mostly used, however, because of sever blast vibration for some occasions, complaints from local residents and rock damages are inevitable. Accordingly, TBM tunnelling is more efficient and effective for such conditions. Nevertheless, tunnel construction costs of TBM cannot compete that of the drill and blasting method in Korea. To overcome such limitations, various TBM equipments and construction technologies are required. In addition, continuous revision of the design standard and specification are required. In this study, a detailed explanation regarding the revised version of TBM section in the tunnel standard specification at 2015 is shown.

Abstract

In this study, model test equipment was developed to evaluate the hydraulic pressure reduction in appling the drainage shield tunnel and the model test for hydraulic pressure difference was performed in case of drainage and undrained conditions. In the result of model test, increase ratio of pore water pressure was decreased in drainage condition and total stress in drainage condition was smaller than that in undrained condition, so the hydraulic pressure was reduced by the groundwater inflow into the model tunnel. In the result of field instrumentation, the hydraulic pressure in the back ground of shield tunnel was small by 11~22% in comparison with the calculated hydraulic pressure (·H) in same groundwater level. In the result of model test and field instrumentation, it was appeared in drainage and undrained conditions that the difference between the theoretical hydraulic pressure and the real hydraulic pressure. It shows that it is possible to apply the reduced hydraulic pressure in applying the drainage shield tunnel and to reduce the segment section due to hydraulic pressure reduction.

Abstract

In the present study, a face safety monitoring system was developed that will enable judging collapse risks on faces during tunnel construction to secure workers' safety. This system enables detecting abnormal behaviors of faces by analyzing the displacement of faces measured in real time using the x-MR control chart technique. In addition, an algorithm to judge false alarms was developed so that abnormal behaviors of faces and errors occurring in the process of work can be distinguished from each other by comparing the number of measured values exceeding the management criteria and moving range k. The results of the present study are applicable to real-time monitoring of behavior on the face in dangerous ground sections to minimize damage to workers.

Abstract

A domestic cutterhead with the diameter of 3.6 m was designed and manufactured in this study. Then, it was attached to an existing earth-pressure balanced shield TBM to excavate a cable tunnel with the length of 1,275 m. Especially, the procedures for TBM cutterhead design and its corresponding performance prediction were also summarized. From field data analyses of the refurbished shield TBM, its maximum advance rate was recorded as 14.4 m/day. Penetration depths of disc cutters were found to be approximately 4 mm/rev, which is equal to the maximum penetration depth designed for the strongest rock strength condition in the target tunnel. Every TBM operating thrust and cutter normal force during TBM driving was much smaller than their corresponding maximum capacities. When cutter acting forces recorded in the field were analyzed, their prediction errors by the CSM model were very high for weak rock conditions. In addition, rock strength showed very close relationships with cutter normal force and penetration depth.

Abstract

The problems for non-rotating of a disc cutter proceed from the faults in inner parts of the disc cutter such as the leak of hydraulic fluid, the intrusion of tunnel mucks and water, overloading, overheating, poor assembly and substandard material. The rotating of a disc cutter is an indicator to show that the inner parts of disc cutter is operable, although the rotational torque depends on the extent of the damage. Therefore, the key in the problems for non-rotating of disc cutter is to maintain that the tapered roller bearings are working properly. This study aims to investigate the inner parts disassembled from disc cutters applied to the field tests in order to help decision for reuse of the disc cutters. As results, surface finishing to remove the scratch on the load zone of the hubs is needed, with the intent to reuse a hub. And the investigation of lapping surface by optical microscope of floating seals and the contamination test of oil need to be performed for reuse of a disc cutter. Especially, the analysis results show that the floating seals play a key role in the normal operation of bearings. There is nothing significant to report in the rest parts such as bearing, shaft, seal retainers.

Abstract

Using existing tunnel for section enlargement and remodeling is being considered as an optimal alternative in order to solve traffic jam in tunnel. The existing method has been performed while blocking the traffic flow. Recently, New enlargement method was developed which can maintain traffic flow during the construction by using protector. It can minimize social loss due to keeping traffic flow. On the other hand, installing and operating protector can cause economic disadvantages. So, social cost estimation considering traffic flow should be considered for relevant economic evaluation of tunnel section enlargement methods. This paper presents the social cost estimation method of tunnel section enlargement methods considering traffic flow. In addition, to compare economic efficiency existing method with new method, suggested method was applied to Maebong Tunnel.

Abstract

A room-and-pillar underground structure is characterized by its grid-type array of galleries. As a result, its construction and economical efficiency can be governed by excavation sequence of galleries. Therefore, this study aims to study the optimum excavation scheme of a room-and-pillar underground structure by considering its various design factors such as ground conditions and excavation sequences. Drill-and-blast method is assumed as a excavation method for a room-and-pillar underground structure. In addition, two kinds of excavation patterns corresponding to a concurrent and a sequential excavation patterns are considered in this study. For the assumed conditions, the structural stability and the construction efficiency based on the number of faces and the travel distance of a jumbo drilling machine are analyzed for the two excavation patterns. Even though the two kinds of excavation patterns show almost the same structural stability as each other, the concurrent excavation pattern is relatively preferable to the sequential excavation pattern in terms of the number of faces in operation and travel distance of a drilling jumbo.
