Abstract

Due to the lack of ground space by urbanization, the demand of utility tunnels for laying social facilities is increasing. During the construction of a utility tunnel in downtown area using a shield TBM, various problems may occur when difficult ground is encountered such as mixed ground and cobbly ground. Thus, in this study, using MIDAS GTS NX (Ver. 280), a numerical analysis was performed on characteristics of difficult ground, reinforced area, depth of cover and groundwater level to analyze the optimal ground reinforced area according to combination of parameters. As a result, it was difficult to secure stability in unconstrained excavation cases on both the mixed ground and the cobbly ground. However, when ground reinforcement grouting as much as 2.0D is applied, convergence occurred within the allowable limit, except for mixed ground with a depth of cover 30 m. In addition, excessive leakage occurred during excavation of both the mixed ground and the cobbly layers. It was able to secure stability after applying waterproof grouting.

Abstract

In recent years, in urban areas, underground of roads are being promoted in order to resolve traffic congestion and to secure green spaces, and due to the low ratio of large vehicles, they are planned or constructed as road tunnels for small cars only. In addition, the tunnels being built in the city is a tendency to be enlarged to play the role of main roads. Accordingly, the capacity of the ventilation system is increasing and various ventilation methods are required, and the importance of maintenance after the completion of the tunnel such as the operating cost of the ventilation system is emphasized. Therefore, the need for optimization of the operation stage for reducing the power consumption of the ventilation system and the study of the ventilation system operation control logic is increasing. In this study, the study on the necessity of the optimization of operation stage and control logic of the ventilation system was carried out to realize the energy-saving operation for the small car only passing through tunnels which is applied of ① jet fan and combination ventilation system (② jet fan + air purifying equipment, ③ jet fan + vertical shaft , ④ jet fan + supply air semi-transverse). As a result of this study, there can be various operating combinations in the case of the combined ventilation system, and even though the amount of ventilation air is the same, the operating power varies greatly according to the operating combinations. It was found that operating the axial fan first rather than the jet fan first operation method has an effect on power saving.

Abstract

Abrasive waterjet cutting technology has been used for rock excavation of tunnels and underground structures due to various advantages. In order to cut rocks by using the abrasive waterjet system, abrasive is essential to enhance impact energies for fracturing the target rock. Since garnet abrasives are not produced in Korea, alternative abrasives, instead of garnets, are needed to achieve the economical waterjet cutting. This study is to analyze cutting performance for rocks with sandy particles as alternative abrasive. Cutting tests were carried out on granite specimens at the constant waterjet energy(e.g., water pressure or water flow rate). The five kinds of sands, sampled by construction fields and natural sites, were prepared to perform the experimental tests. When sea sand was used as an alternative abrasive, cutting performance was secured to be 60~70% compared to the commercial garnet abrasive. Thus, it is expected that sand abrasives can be applied on the waterjet cutting process for the economical excavation construction.

Abstract

The ventilation rate (Qreq) requirement in road tunnels is not just a basic information for determining the tunnel cross-sectional area, but also a major factor for the ventilation system selection. The Qreq is predominantly dependent on the vehicle traffic volume, while among others, the vehicle exhaust emissions and permissible standards are critical. This paper analyzes the changes in the Qreq designing criteria and/or recommendations suggested by World Road Association and local authorities over the last 20 years, since the first local designing criteria was established in 1997 by Korea Expressway Corporation. Additionally, based on the updated vehicle emission standards of Ministry of Environment and recent recommendations of the World Road Association (WRA), changes in the Qreq and its effects are studied in terms of the length and grade of the tunnel.

Abstract

In this paper, The study was conducted on the method to roughly determine the area and length of the multi-utility tunnel before the planning and design phase of the multi-utility tunnel construction. For this purpose, four feasibility indexes were used: traffic density, population density, disaster prevention index (number of workers), and urbanization rate, which reflect the regional characteristics. The installation criteria were set in consideration of the average value and minimum value of the feasibility indexes for the tunnel type among areas that can be installed in the multi-utility tunnel of Seoul. The analysis area included 200 areas based on 14 zones. The results of the analysis based on the minimum value of feasibility indexes indicated that the tunnel type of multi-utility tunnel is suitable for 39 areas with high traffic volume and population. On the other hand, the ‘gun’ area, etc., has a wider population than the ‘si’ and ‘gu’, suggesting that it is not suitable to install multi-utility tunnel. In addition, it can be seen that the larger the index value centered on the minimum value of each index, the smaller the tunnel type of multi-utility tunnel installation area.

Abstract

Slip form method is applied to many cases of a shaft these days because it is safer, more economical and faster than cast-in-place method. Slip-up height of the method is approximately 2.5 to 4.0 m/day. If the temperature of concrete is outside the range of 10 to 30°C, the effects of changes in strength or elastic characteristics are significant. Therefore, it is difficult for slip-up speed to be higher than 3 m/day during winter construction. In addition, concrete has heat caused by hydration, which causes temperature cracking of hardened concrete. Therefore, temperature control of concrete curing is necessary for the continuous slip-up of slip form. In this study, the rebound hardness, time of ultrasonic waves propagation, heat of hydration, and external temperature are measured by developing heating panels and test devices for the continuous slip-up. Based on this, heating slip form is manufactured; this was applied to “Kimpo sites” and “Sinwol sites”. The compared slip-up speed samples were 1.9m/day or 0.200 m/hr on average at Gimpo sites (08:00~17:30) and 2.0 m/day or 0.210m/hr at Sinwol sites.

Abstract

When the tunnel is designed, the ground is classified into several grades and the corresponding support system is applied according to the support pattern table. However, a simple pattern application based on rock grade does not take into account the longitudinal stress transitions occurring at rock grade boundaries. In this study, three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed to estimate the stress change in the longitudinal rock grade change of NATM tunnel, and the influence zone of load transfer was investigated using the influence line and trend line. As a result, the downward change of rock grade in the direction of tunnel excavation occurs in the range of 0.35~0.7D from low-strength rock to high-strength rock around the grade change boundary. It is necessary to apply a downward pattern of about 1.0D to the safety direction in consideration of the influence range of 0.35D to 0.7D.

Abstract

Korea’s long underground roads are being promoted around the metropolitan city center to realize advanced transportation networks. Many disaster prevention facilities are applied to secure fire safety of the closed and long-distance underground roads. As the facility response and fire suppression subjects are unclear, additional human and material damages from fire spread are inevitable. Therefore, in this study, we developed a remote automatic fire extinguishing system that uses the fire extinguishing water inside the fire hydrant to monitor the CCTV in the management room and sprays it directly to the fire site through automatic control. The design application method was studied through the performance improvement that can be put into practical use.

Abstract

This paper is a study on the development of equipment system to obtain data on stability in excavation of sharp curve section of Shield TBM. Shield TBM equipment is being used a lot recently for tunnel excavation. Excavation may result in inevitable detours by buildings above the ground or existing underground structures. Preconstruction simulation is required to verify the stability of the construction in case of this. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an automated control system through the development of this equipment system and conduct simulation through simulation of excavation model in the sharp curve section. A system shall be developed to control the left and right angles and thrust of the equipment, and to view data on the earth pressure and propulsion pressure of the equipment in real time during excavation. With this system, the necessary data can be collected for field testing through excavation method and excavation simulation by angle. It is expected that it will be very useful in assessing the actual Shield TBM by conducting a scale-down model experiment.

Abstract

A great interest in the seismic performance evaluation of small size tunnel structures such as utility tunnel has been taken since recent earthquakes at Pohang and Gyeongju in Korea. In this study, the three-dimensional dynamic analyses of vertical shaft and horizontal tunnel under seismic load were carried out using FLAC3D. Especially, parametric analyses was performed to investigate the effects of interfacial stiffness on interfacial behavior between soil and structure. The parametric analysis showed that the interfacial stiffness scarcely gave an effect on the global dynamic behavior of the structure, while had a significant effect on the local displacement behavior of the connections. The magnitude of the interfacial stiffness was inversely proportional to the displacement, while the magnitude of interface stiffness was proportional to the normal and shear stresses. The results of this study suggest the limitations of the existing empirical equations for interfacial stiffness and emphasize the need to develop new interfacial stiffness models.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to suggest the coefficient of variation of the total load on the segment lining and the coefficient of variation of earth pressure in reliability based design of shield tunnel. For this purpose, the statistical characteristics of weathered soil and weathered rock were calculated by analyzing the site survey data of the domestic urban section. The coefficient of variation could be estimated by applying these values to Terzaghi’s theory using MCS technique. As a result, the coefficient of variation of rock load for weathered soil and weathered rock was 0.08~0.14. The coefficient of variation for the total load acting on the tunnel was LC1 = 0.38, LC2 = 0.33, and LC3 = 0.37. The proposed coefficients of variation can be used in the reliability-based design of shield tunnel segments.

Abstract

Recently, the number of underground road development projects has been increasing to solve traffic problems in the national capital region and metropolitan areas with intensified overcrowding, and there has been a tendency to plan underground roads by applying a double-deck tunnel technology that has advantages in constructability and economical efficiency. The double-deck tunnel has a structure where one excavation section is divided into two parts and used as up and down lines, and is mainly used as a road for small vehicles only due to its low floor height. In addition, due to the small cross-sectional area, it has characteristics different from those of general road tunnels in terms of ventilation and disaster prevention. In this regard, this study proposed an operational plan that applies an oversized exhaust system, which is one of semi-transverse ventilation systems, to small cross-sectional tunnels like double-deck tunnel with low floor height, and a comparative analysis between smoke exhaust characteristics according to the fire occurrence locations and oversized exhaust systems was conducted using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The results showed that unlike uniform exhaust, intensive smoke exhaust using the oversized exhaust port maximized the delay effect of smoke diffusion and limited the smoke within 50 m above and below the fire point.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the field support performance of highperformance lattice girder (BK-Lattice Girder) by using numerical analysis. Three types (50, 70, 95-type) of existing and high performance lattice girders were applied to the cross section of highway 2, 3, and 4 lane tunnels to compare the supporting performance. The numerical analysis was the finite element method and the lattice girder was modeled in three dimensions with an elasto-plastic frame. The ground was modeled as a spring receiving only compression. The load was applied as a concentrated load on the central ceiling of the tunnel section. The yield strengths of the lattice girders were determined from the numerical results to compare the supporting performance of lattice girder. In case of 50-type, the yield strengths of high-performance lattice girders were increased by 6.7~10.0% compared with those of the existing lattice girders. In the case of 70-type, the high-performance lattice girders increased yield strengths by 12.1~14.9% than the existing lattice girder. In the case of 95-type, the high-performance lattice girders increased yield strengths by 13.3~20.0% than the existing lattice girder. As a result of numerical analysis, it was considered that the high-performance lattice girder supported better than the existing lattice girder when only the lattice girders were constructed.
