Abstract

This paper presents the results of laboratory investigation on the deformation behavior of tunnel face reinforced with longitudinal pipes. A series of reduced-scale model tests was carried out to investigate the effect of reinforcement layout on the tunnel face axial displacement as well as the surface settlement. Among other things, the results of the model tests indicate that the axial displacement of tunnel face as well as the ground surface settlement can significantly be reduced by pre-reinforcing the tunnel face with longitudinal pipes, suggesting that the pre-reinforcing technique may effectively be used as a positive ground control method in the urban environments. Also illustrated is that the reinforcing effect is significantly influenced by the reinforcement layout. The implications of the findings from this study are discussed in a great detail.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop improved model for joints of tunnel based on Disturbed State Concept (DSC) model. DSC model is verified with respect to comprehensive laboratory tests performed by Schneider and back prediction results. Based on results of this research, it can be stated that DSC model is capable of characterizing the strain softening and dilative behavior of rough granite joints under four different constant normal stresses.

Abstract

This study is focused on establishing influence zone caused by tunnelling in limestone site. Therefore, the numerical analysis using the FLAC2D was performed considering various locations and magnitudes of cavities. To reduce the stress concentration, the shape of cavities was designed to ellipse. This parametric study reveals that the cavities located at crown part and edge part of tunnel greatly have influenced on stability of tunnel. The effect of distance between tunnel and cavity which is larger than 1-0D (Tunnel diameter) dose not directly related to stability of tunnel, but the nearer a cavity location was, the larger displacement and stress of reinforcement occured within 0.25D.

Abstract

In the construction of the road tunnel in mine area, old mine gangways can cause the instability of the tunnel. In this case study, the field investigation is carried out to figure out the location of old gangways adjacent to the tunnel, and their influence on the tunnel stability is estimated according to the location pattern and rock condition by FLAC analysis. The grouting reinforcement of tunnel crown region and old gangway is suggested and its role on assurance of the tunnel stability is also verified. It can be said from this study that the effect of the old gangway on the stability of tunnel varies with the dimension of gangway, distance from the tunnel, rock condition and groundwater, and therefore these paramerter should be compositively considered in the assessment of the tunnel stability.

Abstract

This research has been conducted to investigate the influence of mined cavities on a tunnel to be constructed around a coal mine. The location and dimension of cavities were supposed by analysing synthetically geological structures and condition of coal beds as well as gangway map since there does not exist any map describing mined cavities. Detailed geological and geophygical survey have also been carried out for the purpose of understanding the geological structure and rock mass conditions. The two dimensional numerical analysis with FLAC has been performed on the geological sections reconstituted from the obtained information and the affects of mined cavities on the tunnel have been assessed.

Abstract

Convergence Confinement Method (CCM) makes a more simple judgement in a ground-support reaction than numerical method. Also this method is good for the applicability of construction feedback and the analysis of field measurement. However, there has been little research with respect to the application of CCM in tunnel construction. One of the problems in CCM is a decision of the time to support installation. To decide a reasonable supporting installation time, support characteristic curve and displacement characteristic curve considering construction stage are proposed. In addition, to predict displacement distribution ratio and load distribution ratio, the time dependent support reaction curve is used. Finally, through a comparison of the result between CCM and numerical analysis, the trust of this study is proved and the practical application is proposed to control resonable tunnel construction management.

Abstract

This paper presents a case study on the construction of a long tunnel named as Solan tunnel , which connects between Mt. Dongbaek station and Dokye station in the Youngdong Railroad. The tunnel will be the longest tunnel with length of 16.4 km in Korea when completed. The tunnel site is located in a complex geological region with faults, cavities and coal measures. In construction of adit No. 2, geophysical investigation methods such as electrical resistivity method and GPR(Ground Penetration Radar) were used to detect faults, cavities and coal measures in advance with some success. The geophysical investigation results and in-situ boring data were used as feedback to improve tunnel reinforcement design. Also, the tube umbrellas of grouted steel pipes were found to have a good reinforcement and grouting effects in zones of faults, cavities. In zones of coal measures, swellex rockbolts with mortar grouting were verified as successful.

Abstract

In this study, a numerical stability analysis was performed for a large tunnel considering excavation sequence. In most cases, stability of a tunnel is analyzed based on the stability of the final excavation stage only. In this study, stability analysis of a tunnel was performed at each excavation stage. In summary, it can be inferred that there is no problem in stability of the tunnel. However, thorough and careful measurements are recommended. Also, it is found that the stability of the tunnel at the 5th excavation stage when the right half of the main tunnel is excavated is rather lower than that of the tunnel at the final excavation stage.
