Sacredness, Gender, and Nation

This essay is about the relation of sacredness and gender in Kim Dongli's novels shown narratives of religious theme. It is concerned about the fact that relation of sacredness and gender is differently realized according as religious theme touched in his novels is about shamanism or Christianity. Kim shows a amicable attitude of shamanistic transcendence against rationalism and female characters embodying it in novels of shamanistic theme, on the other hand he shows a positive attitude of anthropocentric rationalism, through male characters of being incredulous about miracle and sacredness in novels of Christian theme. Such his dual standpoint is seemed to appear because nation or nation-state works as a superordinate norm in his conscious world. Shamanistic world which supernatural incantation coexists with pantheistic thought of returning nature, is affirmed as the sacred because it is regarded as the Korean and tradition. On the other hand, although pouring christening of sacredness upon authority as 'world religion', Christianity is regarded as the threatening because its foreignness and exclusiveness may be making invasion into Korean tradition. It can be said in this point that nation is a religion itself for him.
