Abstract

This research aims to explore the dental students’ perceptions of the need for dental English education to improve commu nication skills competency between foreign patients and dentists. In this study, a total of 137 Korean dental school students participated and were divided into two groups based on their direct patient care experience (Yes: 44 students and No: 93 students). The questionnaire composed of 5-point Likert scale questions, multiple-choice grid questions, and open-ended questions, was administered to investigate dental students’ responses and additional opinions on communication skills in patient- and foreign patient-dentist interaction. Findings indicate that dental students were highly aware of the need for education on communication skills between patients and dentists regardless of the patient’s nationality. Interestingly, when comparing group results based on direct patient care experience, students without direct care experience showed a high need for education in patient-dentist communication skills. Surprisingly, the quantitative results of this research were also sup ported by their responses and the open-ended questions of the questionnaire (qualitative results). This research suggests that communication skills education in dental education plays a key role in developing the student’s competency in communica tion skills between patient-foreign patient-dentists. More detailed results, discussions, and pedagogical implications of the findings are given for dental English education and further potential research directions.

Abstract

Although studies reporting the efficacy of mouth rinse against SARS-CoV-2 have been continuously published, it is chal lenging to select literature through qualitative meta-synthesis or quality assessment of the study. Therefore, this study aims to systematically review the efficacy of mouth rinse against SARS-CoV-2 using the scoping review method and to provide the latest information. Literature search on electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Trials) was conducted. After establishing liter ature inclusion and exclusion criteria, two independent researchers were selected literatures. Of the 15 articles were included in this scoping review, 11 were in vitro studies, and four were in vivo studies. The ingredients tested in these studies were povidone-iodine, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, essential oils, and qua ternary ammonium compounds, and they showed various efficacy against SARS-CoV-2. Despite the relatively limited evidence from the included studies, the use of mouth rinse has the potential to reduce the viral load of SARS-CoV-2. In particular, povidone-iodine is expected to be the most effective against SARS-CoV-2, given the evidence so far.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between periodontal disease and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a respiratory disease, and to suggest its molecular biological mechanism. Oral bacteria and viruses can be aspirated into the respiratory tract and may cause respiratory diseases. The COVID-19 virus can inhabit, replicate and spread in the oral environment including dental plaque, saliva, and periodontal pockets. The COVID-19 virus can induce strong innate immunity and inflammatory responses by binding to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors, which are abundantly present in the oral stratified epithelium in the oral cavity. The COVID-19 virus may activate inflammasome, one of inflammatory key factors in cell cytoplasm. In patients with periodontal disease, oral hygiene habits, professional oral cleaning, and plaque control management are effective for reducing the possibility of COVID-19 infection. This review is based on the evidences from COVID-19 related literature in the last two years.

Abstract

Forensic identification using the dental characteristics is one of the most powerful scientific methods of iden tification. Since dental identification is performed by comparing the dental characteristics between antemortem and postmortem data, success or failure is determined according to the quality and quantity of antemortem data. Antemortem data is ultimately produced and managed by clinicians, therefore, clinician is also one of the im portant factors for successful identification. In this study, the types of antemortem data which is used for dental identification and methods to improve the quality of antemortem data, were reviewed. And suggestions were given to clinicians for increasing the success rate of identification. It is expected that through this mutual com munication between forensic odontologists and clinicians, the identification rate of missing persons in Korea can be improved.

Abstract

The mylohyoid nerve is also called nerve to mylohyoid (muscle). This nerve is a branch from the inferior alveolar nerve, which is very familiar to our dentists due to the frequently used block anesthesia for mandibular tooth treatment. The motor fiber is known to be the main component of the nerve that is distributed in the my lohyoid muscle and anterior belly of digastric muscle. In this review article, the following contents will be discussed: the naming story based on the etymology, the general route and main function of the nerve, the research related to the failure of inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia, and finally other miscellaneous anatomical research results and their clinical significance.
